Annual Coastal Cleanup Day is Around the Corner!

On Saturday, September 17th, the single-largest volunteer event on the planet will take place in your very own backyard at 83 sites in Santa Cruz and Monterey Counties.
Annual Coastal Cleanup Day 2010 brought together 6,043 volunteers in Santa Cruz and Monterey Counties to prevent nearly 20,000 pounds of pollution from entering our Sanctuary in just three hours. We need YOU to make 2011 a triumphant effort, so bring your family, friends and co-workers to Take Action for our oceans this September 17th! The success of Annual Coastal Cleanup Day depends on you. Join us! We assure you it will be fun, easy, and completely rewarding.
Volunteers can participate at their favorite beach, at underserved inland and river sites, at kayak cleanups in the open water, and even underwater at a SCUBA cleanup. Together, with school groups and local businesses, we will work together to create cleaner, safer beaches while supporting a healthy, thriving Monterey Bay.
Thank You to the 300 Volunteers who Made Pollution Prevention this July 2, 4, and 5 a Huge Success

The Pollution Prevention momentum started on July 2nd with a group of sea creatures greeting visitors to Santa Cruz on traffic-jammed Ocean Street. The message was positive, fun, and clear: Pollution Prevention is Patriotic on Monterey Bay. We made the evening news on two stations, the local papers and online news sites, and the Pollution Prevention message spread like wildfire.
On July 4th, teams of SOS volunteers hit our busiest beaches to further spread the Pollution Prevention message, handed out over 1,600 trash and recycling bags, and reached 4,850 beach-goers that day! July 4th Pollution Prevention efforts continually prove to be an important tool for stemming the tide of pollution left behind by the thousands of visitors to our area beaches each holiday.
Check out this article on July 4th...

Then, on July 5th, 263 volunteers in Santa Cruz and Monterey gathered on our beaches for the 'morning after' Star Spangled Beach Cleanup. In just two hours we prevented 1,657 pounds of pollution from entering our Sanctuary and harming marine wildlife.
More volunteers plus less trash than ever before means successful Pollution Prevention efforts for Save Our Shores!

Advocacy Update
| |

The Salinas City Council will vote on a polystyrene (Styrofoam) ban on August 16. Because there is strong opposition to this ban, we need as many people as possible to join in support! Here's how to help advocate for a healthy Sanctuary:
Next up is the Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors' final vote on the plastic bag ban on August 23. Join us in room 525 at 701 Ocean St. in Santa Cruz to support this ordinance and protect our Sanctuary on August 23!
In the City of Marina, SOS, Oceana, Sustainable Marina, Monterey Green Action, and the Marina Rotary spoke in support of a polystyrene ban that has been stalled for 3 years. We will keep you updated on our progress.
Environmental groups around the nation celebrated a major victory in July when the California Supreme Court ruled in favor of the City of Manhattan Beach's right to impose a plastic bag ban without a full Environmental Impact Report. This ruling is set to pave the way to more timely and affordable bag bans in jurisdictions throughout the state. Read more...
It takes a community to protect our Sanctuary. Join us today!

A Special Plea for Help With Marine Education
| |
Save Our Shores is sad to report that funding for one of our most valuable Marine Education programs was not renewed for the 2011-2012 school year. This means that less underserved students in the Watsonville area will learn about the importance of our watersheds and Marine Sanctuary, and how their actions directly impact the wildlife and habitats around Monterey Bay. We can't let this happen!
We aim to keep part of this vital education program running without our regular source of funding, but we can't do it without YOU.
Please donate to our Education Fund today!
Did you know that many schools don't even have budgets for field trips anymore? These kids are the ongoing victims of continuous budget cuts to their school programs, and we don't want to see this one go, too.
Your donation will provide students hands-on opportunities to learn about the plant and animal species of the Monterey Bay watershed - an education we simply don't want them to miss.

Take Action!

Re-authorize the Marine Debris Research,
Prevention, and Reduction Act!
Marine debris and plastic pollution are plaguing oceans and waterways around the world - and the problem keeps getting worse every year.
Take Action to support the Marine Debris Research, Prevention, and Reduction Act!
Introduced by Congressman Sam Farr, HR 1171 will ensure NOAA and the US Coast Guard continue using research and education to better understand the problem of marine debris, as well as removing existing marine debris, fishing gear, and other garbage from our oceans.
