Covewater Classic Film Event to Benefit SOS

Covewater Classic SUP

When:  Friday, July 15th, at 6:30pm

Where: The Rio Theater, Santa Cruz

As part of the First Annual Covewater Classic, Northern California Stand Up Paddle Championships, Covewater SUP will host the Covewater Classic Film Screening on July 15th.

The first film, Destination 3 Degrees, addresses the plastic pollution issue in our oceans while chronicling the SUP journey taken by two women in the Hawaiian islands. It was because of this film that Scott Rubble, owner of Covewater, chose Save Our Shores as the donor recipient for this event. Come join us for a fun night out in Santa Cruz!

The BaitTank Pilot Project - a One Year Snapshot

Beginning last June, Save Our Shores developed a pilot project to tackle cigarette butt litter on our beaches and soon launched an extensive outreach campaign in our local papers, including a TV PSA. The good news is that not only are the BaitTanks edgy enough to get some attention, they have proven to be one of the most successful pollution prevention tools we've seen thus far.
BaitTanks are a Huge Success
On average, the Santa Cruz BaitTanks produced a 70% decrease in littered cigarette butts, where in Capitola, an 80% decrease was seen.

The success of the BaitTanks speaks for itself.

And now that our pilot year has come to a close, we are working on the next phase of this campaign. We hope to soon provide a rebate program with the City of Santa Cruz, as well as launch our Adopt-a-BaitTank program. Stay tuned!

Spotlight on our Measure E River Cleanups

River Cleanups with Save Our Shores

We are excited to report that volunteer turnout for our river cleanups has been steadily increasing this past year. At our last 4 river cleanups, we coordinated 253 volunteers who removed 5,112 lbs. of trash and 1,847 lbs. of recyclables from the levee, banks, and waters of the San Lorenzo River in downtown Santa Cruz. Thank you, volunteers!

Our cleanup data hits home.

During the last 4 river cleanups our volunteers removed:

  • 4,975 cigarette butts
  • 1,172 plastic food wrappers
  • 988 plastic pieces
  • 748 plastic bags
  • And a whole lot of other stuff like 34 bike parts and 13 tires
Stay tuned for the next Measure E river cleanups this fall!
Advocacy Update

We're happy to report that two critical ocean protection bills that we've been supporting are progressing through the state legislative process.

SB 568 was recently approved by the Senate and now moves to the Assembly. This bill would ban polystyrene (Styrofoam) take-out containers statewide - a huge step forward for pollution prevention in our oceans. Support SB 568 today!

AB 376 would ban the sale of shark fins in California and our hope is that this important species protection bill will quickly pass into law, following the lead of Hawaii, Oregon, and Washington state.  Take Action to support AB 376 today!

Locally, the Central Coast Sanctuary Alliance is busy gathering support from the business community on their mission to create communities free of plastic bags all around the Sanctuary. Find out more via the link above.

Great news: The US House of Representatives passed an amendment to prohibit the approval of genetically engineered salmon. Phew!  Read more...
