Join the I Heart Clean Beaches Crew This July 4 & 5!
We want YOU to hit the beaches to spread the positive Clean Beaches message with us over the busy Fourth of July holiday.
On Monday, July 4th, 1-5pm: Volunteers will hand out trash and recycling bags on our busiest beaches while encouraging visitors to properly dispose of and pack out their trash.
On Tuesday, July 5th, from 8-10am:
Volunteers will join forces for the Star Spangled Beach Cleanup, the second largest beach cleanup of the year!
Why do we do it? The long, beach-going Fourth of July holiday weekend leaves our beautiful beaches completely trashed and polluted, harming marine life and public health. Last year, our July 5th volunteers removed 3,150 lbs. of pollution from just 6 Santa Cruz beaches in 3 hours. It's essential we work together to Take Action for pollution prevention this holiday weekend.

Unite for Hands Across the Sand on June 25th
When: Saturday, June 25th, 11 am - 12:30 pm
Where: Cowell/Main Beach by the Santa Cruz Wharf
When Hands Across the Sand became a worldwide event in the wake of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf last year, over 1,000 protest events took place in 43 countries, and all 50 US states. Hands Across the Sand quickly became the largest gathering of people united against offshore oil drilling in the history of the world. This June 25th, Take Action for clean energy and healthy marine habitats by joining us at 11am on Cowell Beach for a quick beach cleanup followed by the Hands Across the Sand protest. Together, we'll send a clear message that dirty oil is not the answer - and we demand clean energy now. Speak out and help protect our marine environment by uniting with Save Our Shores, Surfrider Santa Cruz, and thousands of Hands Across the Sand participants around the world. Making Waves ~ The SOS Marine Education Program Many of you might be surprised to learn that Save Our Shores' Marine Education Program keeps multiple SOS staff, Stewards, and interns quite busy throughout the school year educating our youth about the important marine issues of today. In the 2010-2011 school year alone, SOS reached over 4,000 students through classroom presentations, assemblies, and field trips to our beaches and watersheds!
Summer break is fast approaching, and we're just wrapping up our work with over 30 local schools as part of the Santa Cruz County Green Schools Program. Green Schools also allows us to reach many more under-served middle and elementary students from the Watsonville area.
Partnering with O'Neill Sea Odyssey to provide presentations and beach cleanups to students is always a lot of fun, too. In this program, students learn all about the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary from Save Our Shores, as well as aboard the O'Neill Sea Odyssey boat out on the bay.
With state budget cuts hitting education hard, we need your support more than ever to ensure our vital Marine Education Programs continue to reach our students in the 2011-2012 school year. Donate to SOS' Marine Education Program today!

Then on Sunday, July 3rd, the community will gather for their annual Ocean Conservation Night to view the film Oceans. Save Our Shores will join other marine conservation groups at the event to educate attendees about the important conservation taking place right in their own backyard.
Covewater Classic Film Screening on July 15th
As part of the First Annual Covewater Classic, Northern California Stand Up Paddle Championships, Covewater SUP will also host the Covewater Classic Film Screening on Friday, July 15th. Join us at the Rio Theater at 6:30 pm for a fun night out in Santa Cruz!
The first film, Destination 3 Degrees, addresses the plastic pollution issue in our oceans while chronicling the SUP journey taken by two women in the Hawaiian islands. The second film, Take Tahoe Circumnavigation, will take you on a ride on California's most stunning alpine lake.
Thanks to Scott Rubble, owner of Covewater, proceeds from the film screening will be generously donated to Save Our Shores to further our ocean conservation efforts right here on the Monterey Bay.

Advocacy Update
| |

Save Our Shores Executive Director Laura Kasa joined with environmental and waste management groups at the state capitol in May to garner support for SB 568, the statewide bill to ban polystyrene (Styrofoam) take-out containers. Passage of SB 568 would be a huge step forward for pollution prevention in our oceans.
Take Action on this critical bill below!
Good News: The Half Moon Bay City Council recently approved an ordinance to ban polystyrene take-out containers, following the lead of San Mateo County. The local fight against plastic pollution continues on.
AB 376, the bill to ban the sale of shark fins in California, is swiftly moving through the legislative approval process. Similar bills are moving in Oregon, Washington, and beyond. Our fingers remain crossed as we push for this critical marine protection to pass into law. Take Action to support AB 376 today!

Support a Statewide Styrofoam Ban for California!

Our environment & marine species are completely inundated with polystyrene (Styrofoam). YOU can help stop this unnecessary form of plastic pollution from reaching our oceans & watersheds by supporting SB 568. This bill was recently stalled before going to Senate vote - so we need to keep putting the pressure on in support of this critical bill.
