Jackson Browne: A Save Our Shores Ocean Hero "All the plastic the world has ever made is still out there," said Jackson Browne in his interview with the Santa Cruz Weekly. "Plastic was a big mistake, and we need to do something about it."
Jackson Browne, environmental activist and world-famous musician for decades on end, kicked off his solo-acoustic tour here in Santa Cruz on February 23rd. Inspired by Jackson's more recent anti-plastic activism that raises awareness about critical ocean issues, Save Our Shores presented Browne with our Ocean Hero Award (with help from students at Gateway School). We also worked with the City of Santa Cruz to officially proclaim Feb. 23, 2011, as Jackson Browne Day in Santa Cruz, and were honored to be asked to table at the concert to spread locally our common quest to stop plastic pollution in our oceans. Jackson sang his new song about plastic pollution that night called If I Could Be Anywhere. He shared his stories and thoughts about plastic pollution, and urged the crowd to consider the negative impacts plastic creates in our environment. The Save Our Shores table was flooded by concert-goers eager to learn more about this issue on a local level, and we were happy to receive support on our petition to ban single-use plastic bags in each city and county bordering the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary.
Davenport Gallery Celebrates Our Oceans

Come on out to the Davenport Gallery this month to experience different mediums of breathtaking art inspired by the ocean in the art show, Our Oceans. Called "a celebration of the natural beauty above and below the surface of the sea," Our Ocean features stunning underwater photography as well as ocean-themed paintings and sculptures. Our Oceans opens on March 2nd and continues through March 27th. Hours are 11am-5pm on Wednesdays - Sundays. The artists reception, held on March 12th from 3-6pm, will even include a guest marine mammal expert who will speak about whale migrations at 3pm! A portion of proceeds benefit Save Our Shores. Presenting the 2011 Class of Sanctuary Stewards!
Meet the talented, new team of Save Our Shores volunteers, gathered in the photo above for their very first Steward class on February 22. Make sure to say hello as you see them on our beaches and out in the community working on behalf of SOS to protect the Monterey Bay!
Welcoming Martel Andersen and Scott Malsom to the Save Our Shores Board You might recognize the names, as both Martel and Scott hail from the SOS Sanctuary Steward Class of 2009 and have gone above and beyond their volunteer commitments to this organization. We are all very excited to work with Martel and Scott to protect and preserve our marine environment on an entirely new level, and know they will each bring new perspective and experience to the Save Our Shores Board. Welcome!

Ban Shark Finning!
Sign the Ocean Conservancy petition via the link below to support AB 376 to put an END to the shark fin trade in California. Shark populations have been dramatically decreasing in recent years. Some estimate that 70 million sharks are killed every year for shark fin soup alone, and some shark species have depleted over 80%!
