A Common Vision for a Plastic Bag-Free
Santa Cruz County

Save Our Shores is on a mission to ban single-use plastic bags around Monterey Bay and we need your help! Santa Cruz county could very well become the first California county with a comprehensive ban on single-use plastic bags. In order for this to happen, each of the four incorporated cities within Santa Cruz County - Santa Cruz, Capitola, Scotts Valley, and Watsonville - AND the County of Santa Cruz must each enact separate laws to deal with the single-use plastic bag blight.
The County of Santa Cruz led the charge locally by accepting the draft Single-Use Bag Reduction Ordinance this past April. The City of Santa Cruz soon followed, and the City of Capitola is currently working a similar Ordinance. It's said that Scotts Valley and Watsonville are in the 'beginning stages' of a plastic bag ban, so we started a petition to help speed things up a bit. The petition below calls for each municipality of Santa Cruz County to each accept a ban on single-use plastic bags.
Help us spread the word and sign the petition below! A plastic bag-free Santa Cruz county will be your reward, and a healthier, happier Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary will follow.
Last month, Save Our Shores set out to form a new alliance around the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary to combat plastic pollution. It's called the Central Coast Sanctuary Alliance, and it already includes well over twenty environmental organizations such as Surfrider Monterey and Santa Cruz, the Plastic Pollution Coalition, Ecology Action, Defenders of Wildlife, the Clean Ocean Projects, and many more!
The goal of the Central Coast Sanctuary Alliance is to create a marine environment free of plastic bag litter. Stay tuned to saveourshores.org for updates on this exciting new alliance.

SOS Packs the Del Mar for the Bag It Movie Event
On Wednesday, November 17th, over 400 people came out to watch the award-winning film Bag It at the Del Mar Theater in downtown Santa Cruz and hear from Jeb Berrier, the star of the film. Save Our Shores staff, volunteers, members, Kirby School kids, Bag Monsters and the Santa Cruz blue community gathered for a comical, in-depth look at the many effects our disposable plastic lifestyles can create. We gathered over 215 petition signatures in support of a single-use plastic bag ban throughout Santa Cruz County, and a great time was had by all.
If you missed Bag It with Save Our Shores at the Del Mar, you can support the film's release by requesting it on Netflix!

Huge Victory in Fight Against Offshore Oil Drilling
Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar just announced that NO new oil drilling leases will be granted for the next five years for the Pacific and Atlantic Coasts, as well as the Eastern Gulf of Mexico. This news comes after constant debate on new oil leases in the post-BP oil spill climate, where opposition to new offshore oil leases has been increasing since the spill began in April. A victory for environmentalists, clean energy, and animals alike, the recent news is a step forward in the right direction. Read more...

The End of the Line Film Screening in Half Moon Bay
Join Save Our Shores and your blue ocean community for a Half Moon Bay movie event addressing the state of our oceans: The End of the Line. The End of the Line is the first major documentary to reveal the worldwide problem of overfishing and poor fisheries management, which is leading to a potentially catastrophic decline in fish populations and ocean health. Based on a book written by Charles Clover and filmed around the world, The End of the Line shows us that fishing with modern technology has put us in a dire situation where we are very close to destroying entire ocean ecosystems. A panel discussion will follow the film.

Why I Save Our Shores by Dave Zaches |
"Save Our Shores' work for the oceans and the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary reminds us that there is so much beneath that pretty blue surface that we don't see. The fish, plants, and marine mammals all play a huge role in sustaining life, even on land. Save Our Shores rallies kids, parents, and the community to help clean up our beaches and waterways all year long - AND they make it fun!
Save Our Shores, best to you and to our community for the holidays & 2011." -Dave Zaches, Monterey Save Our Shores Supporter since 1995 | |
