Record-Breaking Coastal Cleanup Day 2010 is a Huge Success!
A record-breaking 6,043 volunteers came out for Coastal Cleanup Day this year at 85 sites throughout Santa Cruz & Monterey Counties. It was the largest volunteer effort the Monter ey Bay has ever seen!
A big THANK YOU goes out to our Site Captains, Donors, Volunteers, Board members, and Stewards, for supporting this important day of citizen action on Monterey Bay.
The California Coastal Commission also reports record-breaking numbers with well over 1 million volunteers participating state-wide!
In Santa Cruz County, over 4,030 volunteers removed 12,062 lbs. of trash and 3,750 lbs. of recycling from our local beaches and waterways. In Monterey County, over 2,012 volunteers removed about 3,550 lbs. of trash and 1,010 lbs. of recycling in just three hours! Together, that's nearly 20,000 lbs. of pollution kept from entering the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary.
This year, the Bring Your Own message took root and 650 volunteers brought their own reusable buckets, bags, and gloves to help cut down on the amount of single-use disposables generated during the event. We couldn't do it without you!

City of Santa Cruz Approves Ordinance to Ban Single-Use Plastic Bags
In absence of a state-wide policy to ban single-use plastic bags (AB 1998), and following the lead from Santa Cruz County who approved the bag ban ordinance back in April, the Santa Cruz City Council recently voted to move forward with the draft Single-Use Bag Reduction Act. County and City staff are working on the required Environmental Report before the ban is able to be fully implemented, but some of our environmentally minded retailers like New Leaf Community Markets have already removed plastic bags from their stores. Save Our Shores will continue to keep you posted on the progress of these local bans.

Vote NO on Proposition 23 on the November Ballot
Lets keep big oil polluters out of California! Proposition 23 is a ballot initiative introduced by out of state oil companies aiming to halt California's landmark Global Warming Solutions Act of before it is enacted. The CA Global Warming Solutions Act will slash emissions, hold big polluters accountable, create thousands of green jobs, and move us into a green energy future once it is enacted.
Tell big oil giants Valero, Tesoro, and Flint Hills Petroleum to get Proposition 23 out of California. Your NO VOTE on Prop 23 in the November 2nd elections is critical to ensuring our Global Warming Solutions Act becomes law.
