2010 Ocean Advocates Awarded at the Toast to the Coast Celebration
Each year at our Toast to the Coast celebration, we like to take a special time out to honor ocean advocates and local sustainability pioneers who work to protect the oceans and our own Monterey Bay.
The 2010 Ocean Protection Hero award went to Casson Trenor, author of Sustainable Sushi, current Senior Markets Campaigner with Greenpeace USA, and founder of the world's first sustainable sushi restaurant, Tataki Sushi and Sake Bar, in San Francisco.
Our Youth of the Year award went to the 5th Grade Class of Mount Madonna School 2009-2010 for their inspirational and award winning video about marine debris: Our Big Blue Landfill and What We Can Do About It.
Kelly's French Bakery was awarded as Business of the Year for spreading the Bring Your Own message through their one of a kind Dinner Markets that support local non-profits and build community at the very same time. Lastly, the Save Our Shores Volunteer of the Year award went to Martel Andersen. Martel is a Bring Your Own missionary, a dedicated Sanctuary Steward, and an incredible friend to this organization. We love you!

SOS Installs BaitTank Cigarette Butt Receptacles to Help Keep Toxins out of the Ocean
What do we have against cigarette butts? Cigarette filters and tobacco contain heavy metals and organic compounds that create higher levels of toxicity in the marine environment. Not only that; cigarette butts are the #1 most common form of marine debris collected during SOS beach cleanups.
In fact, we have removed 123,337 cigarette butts during our cleanups since 2007! That's why SOS has been working with both cities of Capitola and Santa Cruz to install BaitTanks along the Capitola Esplanade, the Santa Cruz Wharf, and Beach Street in Santa Cruz. BaitTanks are steel, custom designed collection boxes with a shark fin decal on top displaying the message: "Save some fish. Feed me butts."
The BaitTanks aim to raise awareness about the problem of toxic cigarette litter and to encourage people to use the receptacles to help protect ocean health. Help us spread the word!
Save Our Shores will continue to target problematic
pollution in our community and develop ways to combat it. Help us keep our community free to toxic pollution by becoming a Member of Save Our Shores today!
California Senate Fails to Pass the Historic Plastic Bag Ban, AB 1998In a disappointing turn of events on the very last day of the California legislative season, the CA Senate failed to pass what has been deemed 'the environmental bill of the year' here in California, AB 1998, the ban on single-use plastic bags. AB 1998 was introduced to the California Assembly by Assemblywoman Brownley this February, and went on to foster more attention and support than any other bill this year. Read more...
Have you seen The Majestic Plastic Bag video?
While a uniform State policy is the best option overall, the increasing number of local bans will still allow citizens to create important environmental change in their own communities.
Save Our Shores was successful in helping pass the local ban here in Santa Cruz County (still yet to be implemented), and continues to fight for plastic bag bans in San Mateo County and the City of Salinas. And were not stopping there; SOS is also tackling styrofoam bans for the cities of Half Moon Bay and Salinas, as well as San Mateo County.
Join the fight today!

Take Action! | Four months after the BP oil spill in the Gulf, the whales and wildlife are still suffering severely. In fact, the endangered Sperm Whale population in the Gulf has already lost one of its clan because their prime feeding grounds are polluted with with oil.
Its said that the loss of just 3 adult Sperm Whales could result in extinction in the Gulf.
Our wildlife needs a voice. Take Action to support increased protections in sensitive wildlife areas like the Gulf of Mexico.
