Patagonia Santa Cruz is giving out $5,000 to local non-profit groups during the Patagonia Voice Your Choice campaign. The Patagonia Santa Cruz Outlet store has selected three local environmental groups that have done something extraordinary to help restore and protect the environment.

Now through October 24th, Patagonia is asking the community to vote for the organization they feel has made the biggest environmental impact.  Save Our Shores is one of the nominated groups and we would love your support to receive funding for our programs.

To make your selection, go to the Patagonia Store at 415 River St., Santa Cruz, and cast your vote!

Do you ever wonder what the world would be like with no fish? What about going to a restaurant with no seafood on the menu? Researchers say that if something is not done soon, we will run out of fish by 2048.  This film documents fisheries that are decreasing at an alarming rate.  It illustrates how we as consumers can make a difference and save the fisheries of the world.

Save Our Shores is partnering with Monterey Green Action, Surfrider Foundation, Marine Life Gallery, Sustainable Pacific Grove, Citizens for a Sustainable Monterey County and Monterey Institute of International Studies for this exclusive FREE screening of a groundbreaking film that everyone should see.  For more information about the movie visit

Annual Coastal Cleanup Day 2009 Results
Manresa Beach Cleanup
The 25th Annual Coastal Cleanup Day marked the largest community-wide cleanup effort in Santa Cruz County to date. 3,802 volunteers removed 9,012 pounds of trash and 3,903.5 pounds of recycling from our local beaches, rivers, sloughs, and kelp beds.

The beach with the most trash collected in Santa Cruz County went to Moran Lake Beach with a total of 540 pounds, the river site with the most trash went to the Felton Covered Bridge site along the San Lorenzo River with a total of 2,450 pounds collected!  Some of the strangest items found include a dryer, radiator, a couch, part of a toilet bowl, screen door and metal bed frame to name a few.

A big thank you to the thousands of dedicated volunteers who made this year's cleanup efforts such a huge success!

Here is a slideshow of pictures from all over the world from this year's Annual Coastal Cleanup Day.

Marine Tip of the Month
Prepare for Autumn rain
Storm Drain Runoff

With the start of Fall we can expect the first rain, and with rain comes stormwater runoff.  Pollutants such as motor oil, fertilizers, yard wastes, and litter find their way into our rivers, streams, and oceans via city storm drains, carried by rain that becomes stormwater runoff.  Click here for some simple things you can do around your neighborhood to protect our ocean and its inhabitants from these toxic pollutants.
