Pollution Prevention is Patriotic: Help SOS this July 4th and 5th
We need your help to educate beach goers about the deadly impacts of
plastic trash and to spread the "Pack Your Trash" message:
-
Aptos Parade is July 4th from 10am-noon, come show your support.
- Pollution Prevention is right after the parade from noon-4pm, we need volunteers to help pass out garbage bags to beach-goers so they remember to pack their trash.
- Star Spangled Beach Cleanup is July 5th from 7am-11am, come help us clean the beaches so the trash doesn't make it into the ocean.
To help out, please contact volunteer@saveourshores.org.

Sea Lions Starving in Santa Cruz There has been a flood of articles recently about California Sea Lions stranding themselves on beaches with exhaustion from starvation. This is a major problem that has many aspects: El Niņo, sea lion overpopulation, upwelling problems leading to less anchovies for food, pollution, runoff of fertilizers and other chemicals, etc. An issue like this can really bring attention to the harm we are causing our oceans - it is time to think about the big picture and stop treating our ocean like a dump. Now is the time to get involved in efforts such as beach cleanups, pollution prevention and marine mammal rescue. If you see a marine mammal in distress please call 831.633.6298. To volunteer for Save Our Shores contact Kate at kate@saveourshores.org. To volunteer for the Marine Mammal Center in Moss Landing contact volunteer@tmmc.org.

Attention Small Businesses - Sea Otters Need Your Help!
In 2006, the bill AB 2485 was passed to create a voluntary check-off on
income tax forms to create a research fund to help the endangered sea otters of California.
California
taxpayers must contribute a minimum target amount each year to keep
the CA Sea Otter Fund alive. In 2009, that minimum is $262,500. Right
now
the Sea Otter Fund is in a precarious position - they have not yet met
the
minimum contribution requirement for 2009 and the majority of
individuals have
already finished filing their 2008 taxes. We are asking small
businesses that file individual California Form 540 tax returns to contribute to this important research.
A small contribution from every Californian
will go a long way towards helping to recover one of California's most
charismatic and wonderful species - the sea otter!
For more information, please visit this website.
