Greetings!

What's that JUNK in my water?  Turning the Tide on Plastics

Join SOS and Surfrider- Santa Cruz for a happy hour event with staff from Algalita Marine Research Foundation to learn about what's happening today in the North Pacific Gyre, how plastics continue to be one of the biggest threats to our oceans and what you can do about it.

3-5 pm on Sunday June 7th at Cypress Lounge, 120 Union Street in downtown Santa Cruz.  The event is FREE (with a $5 donation suggestion) and all ages can attend. Food and drink are available for purchase, but are not required to attend the event. Cypress Lounge is co-sponsoring the event.

The Algalita Research Foundation will share a multi-media presentation about their Message in a Bottle project and they will give local leaders samples of ocean water from the Gyre.  There will also be some great door raffle prizes such as an SOS sweatshirt and BYO kit.

Ocean Film Festival June 6th

Sea Studios Foundation, in honor of World Ocean Day, presents three films focusing on the effects of plastics on the ocean.  The event is on June 6th from 12-7pm at the IMAX theater on Cannery Row in Monterey.  Each movie is $6 or $15 for all three.  There will be a panel discussion at 6pm discussing the dangers of plastic to the ocean.

Got blue marbles?

Have you committed a random act of ocean kindness recently? Then you deserve a blue marble.  You can then pass it on to someone who has done something great for the ocean, or you can give it to someone and suggest something they can do for the ocean.

Then share your blue marble story with links to photos or video of your blue marble on the bluemarbles.org blog.  And write about it on your own blog, facebook, or twitter, post images to flickr and youtube, keyword “bluemarbles.org”.

Visit the SOS office to pick up a blue marble and help us spread some ocean love.

Pollution Prevention is Patriotic: Help SOS this Fourth of July

Every year, the July 4th holiday invites local residents and visiting tourists to picnic at Santa Cruz County Beaches.  And every year, thousands of pounds of trash are left littering our beaches on
July 5th.
We need your help to educate beach goers about the deadly impacts of plastic trash and to spread the "Pack Your Trash" message.

SOS will march in the Aptos Fourth of July Parade and comb local beaches spreading our message and passing out trash and recycle bags.  Then we'll return to the beach early on July 5th and cleanup the mess that is left behind.
To help with any of these activities, contact volunteer@saveourshores.org.

Marine Tip of the Month

While researching his current novel, Eye of the Whale, Doug Abrams worked closely with leading scientists (such as Roger Payne of Ocean Alliance) and took great inspiration from the work of organizations like SOS.
There is a strong alignment between the goals of his novel and the SOS campaign to stop marine debris -- both aim to raise awareness around and combat the presence of hazardous chemicals in our oceans. For more on the ties between Doug's novel and Save Our Shores' goals, click here for the synopsis.  To buy your own copy of the book and support SOS, visit http://astore.amazon.com/saveourshores-20
