BCSP's Bright Future Ahead - Letter from the Board President
Samuel  J. Gualardo, CSP
Peter Drucker, a writer, management consultant, and self-described "social ecologist" once said, "The best way to predict the future is to create it." Mr. Drucker understood that no one can predict the future, but you can work toward creating it. This past year, BCSP and the Board drafted a set of five equally important strategic goals for creating BCSP's future:

Quality
BCSP credentials will remain the unquestioned gold standard of safety practitioners.

Awareness
BCSP will continue to build awareness of the credential and the importance of those credentials among decision makers.

Value
Key stakeholders will understand and value safety practice and the BCSP credentials above all others.

Global Positioning
BCSP will better understand global opportunities and drive global certification.

Organizational Excellence
BCSP will be a fiscally sound, well governed, nimble organization positioned to respond to strategic opportunities.

To meet these goals, a wide variety of strategies and objectives were outlined including:
  • Creating and activating the new credential management system, which when it goes "live" in 2011, will be the foundation for credential development.
  • Moving to a new headquarters building in April with room to expand staff, enhance technology and better manage our credentials for the next twenty years.
  • Increasing our outgoing communications to certificants to reaffirm the value of certification.
  • Delivering targeted messages to decision makers and other non-safety audiences to create greater awareness of the EHS profession and our credentials.
  • Creating PSA's on the EHS field and certification.
  • Expanding the use of social media to deliver our message.
  • Participating in global initiatives to assess the market interest in the EHS certification globally.
  • Exploring additional cost containment, volume discounts and increased administrative efficiencies.
I foresee the future of BCSP and our credential holders as the sought after leaders in safety, health and the environmental profession.  Diverse with respect to location, industry affiliation, age, gender and ethnicity and highly recognized and respected domestically and internationally. The future is ours to create.

In closing, I would like to thank the current and past Board members for their unselfish, dedicated service to BCSP.  Most certificant holders don't fully appreciate the countless hours spent behind the scenes keeping BCSP on track. My year as President ushered in several significant operational and infrastructure changes and many unique challenges. The dedication of the Board and tireless efforts on the part of the BCSP staff over the year made my experience both fruitful and enjoyable. Soon I will hand the gavel to the new Board President, Margaret Carroll, and will continue to look forward to BCSP's bright future ahead.
