STS and the STS-Construction Exam
Steven Schoolcraft, CSP, P.E., CAE
| For more than 15 years, the Board of Certified Safety
Professionals has administered a supervisor level certification program
entitled the Safety Trained Supervisor (STS). The program is targeted to companies with employees who are managers,
first line supervisors or have other safety responsibilities adjacent to their
main job. For companies utilizing the STS program, a missing link in
the chain between management and line employees is joined. By embracing the STS
credentialing concept, management is able to convince supervisors that they themselves
have the competence to carry out their safety-related supervisory
responsibilities. In turn, the supervisors know management supports them in
carrying out their safety-related responsibilities, and the supervisors have
the confidence to do what they need to do to help ensure they are supervising
work in a safe and healthful work environment. There are several paths for achieving the STS
credential. The first one, introduced in
1995, was the construction path. Later,
paths in general industry and petrochemical were released. A mining path is forthcoming this year. All examination paths lead to the same STS
certification.
As with all of our nationally accredited certification programs, BCSP is
required to perform periodic research on what tasks, knowledge, and skills make
up the governed practice. For the third
time, BCSP completed this revalidation research on the construction examination
path for STS. In October 2010, BCSP will
begin examining candidates in the construction path using the new examination
based on the results of this latest research. The new examination is validated against international
supervisory practice. Candidates are not required to demonstrate memorized knowledge of regulations and
standards. However, candidates must have a clear understanding of the
techniques and objectives of effective line supervision. This new, revalidated STS construction
examination positions the enlightened corporate culture to higher levels of
positive safety performance. The
examination blueprint covering the exact tasks, knowledge, and skills on which
the new STS construction examination is based is found on the BCSP website. Embracing the STS credentialing program in your company is
not a "flavor of the month," an incentive program, or yet another training
requirement. The STS program is a
long-term corporate commitment to the continuing development of its supervisory
employees while ensuring all levels of management are reinforcing employee
and supervisory efforts to achieve the fundamental "Safety Always" focus.

Brad Giles named ASSE Society Fellow
Giles is the Past President of the BCSP Board of Directors
|
In recognition of his outstanding service and dedication to the safety
profession, the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) recently
named member Bradley D. Giles of Boise, ID, a Society Fellow. Giles
received the award during ASSE's annual Professional Development
Conference (PDC) and Exposition - Safety 2010, in Baltimore, MD. Giles
also received the prestigious President's Award on Sunday, June 13,
during the House of Delegates Meeting. The Society Fellow is the highest
honor granted by ASSE, recognizing professional members who have
displayed life-long excellence in safety and service. Nominated by their
peers, region or chapter, candidates for the Society Fellow honor are
selected based upon their work, involvement in ASSE and long-term
contributions in advancing the safety profession.
Giles is the Vice President of Environmental Safety, Health and Security
at URS Corporation, a Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Safety
Trained Supervisor (STS) and a Registered Professional Engineer (PE).
With over 33 years of safety, health and environmental (SH&E)
management and engineering experience, Giles has been an influential
member of ASSE and has made many contributions to the profession. He
was elected to the Board of Directors of the Board of Certified Safety
Professionals from 2004 through 2010 and was President during 2009. He is
also a past chairman and member of the National Construction Safety
Executives. Giles earned his BS and MS degrees from Southern Illinois
University (SIU).
Giles is a member of ASSE's Snake River Chapter and has been extremely
active at the national Society level. He received the 1994 ASSE
Construction Safety Professional of the Year (SPY) award and has been a
co-sponsor of ASSE Future Safety Leaders Conference from 2006-2010.
Giles has been instrumental in supporting the activities of the ASSE
Foundation (ASSEF) and has provided a scholarship and internship
opportunity through URS Corporation since 2005. He serves as a
Foundation Trustee and as ASSEF Golf Tournament Sponsor from 2007-2010
and created the Linda and Brad Giles Scholarship Fund in 2008 to further
promote opportunities for higher education in SH&E. In honor of
his achievement as an ASSE Fellow, Applications International
Corporation (AIC) made an $1800 contribution to the ASSE Foundation's
(ASSEF) Linda and Brad Giles Scholarship Fund. This will provide two
scholarships for students in SH&E.
Sponsor and ASSE Society past-President and BCSP's current Board President, Samuel J. Gualardo, CSP, stated,
"I have known Brad and followed his career for many years. Brad and I
have served on the BCSP Board together and in that capacity, I witnessed
numerous examples of his broad knowledge and dedication to the EH&S
profession. He has made abundant contributions as a speaker, writer and
volunteer. He exemplifies the qualities necessary to be recognized as a
Fellow by ASSE."

BCSP Unveils New CSP Logo, Retires Corporate Logo
New changes go into affect immediately
|
The Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP) has unveiled a new
logo for the Certified Safety Professional® (CSP®) certification and
has retired the original, forty-year old corporate logo.
The new CSP logo creates a visual identity and reflects the credential's
professionalism and quality standards. The two colors of green and the
diamond shape are elements continued from the former CSP logo. The three
diamonds are representative of the sum of human ability: thought, word
and deed. The subtle arrow shape is indicative of the CSP credential
moving forward. The logo's clean and modern look reflects trust,
reliability and knowledge which are key to the success of BCSP and the
professionals who have attained the CSP credential.
The origin of the corporate logo dates to 1969 when a green diamond with
gold trim and lettering and fifteen vertical lines representing BCSP
was created. The "logo with the lines" represented BCSP until its formal
retirement at the end of April, 2010. Over the years, the "logo without
lines" became the de facto logo for the CSP.
BCSP conducted targeted research with surveys to credential holders and
non-credential holders in an effort to learn how the two logos were
viewed in the marketplace. The findings indicated a difficulty in
readability and a general feeling of the logos being "old fashioned."
After months of review and several iterations, the new, modern and clear
CSP logo was presented to the BCSP Board of Directors and approved last
month.
"The goal of the new CSP logo was to re-imagine it for the 21st century,
making it readable and with nods to the original," said Sam Gualardo,
BCSP Board of Directors, President.
The new CSP logo will begin appearing in print and electronic media
immediately. The existing corporate logo identity will slowly be phased
out over the course of the following years.

New Building, Certification Management System on the Horizon
Staff expecting to open the doors on new building in early 2011
| The BCSP Board of Directors, at the last Board meeting, approved plans to build a new headquarters in northwest Champaign, Illinois as well as proceed with the development of a brand new electronic certification management system.
The staff has outgrown the current BCSP facility, which has been in existence for 30 years. Still early in the development stages, the new BCSP HQ will be designed for the next 30 years facilitating increased production and demonstrating professionalism.
BCSP has been working behind the scenes to implement a new certification
management system
scheduled for late 2010. The new system is designed to
promote growth as well as allow credential holders and those in process
to access and manage their information in an elegant and simplified way.

BCSP Eliminates the GSP 10 Year Rule
GSP Retroactivity Program extended and all GSPs now have three
years after eligibility to sit for the Comprehensive Examination
|
The BCSP Board of Directors has
approved the proposal to eliminate the Graduate Safety Practitioner
(GSP) 10 Year Rule, effective immediately. This rule stated a GSP would
have to pass the Comprehensive Practice examination and become a
Certified Safety Professional (CSP) within ten years of their graduation
date. GSPs will now be given the full three years from their
eligibility date, like all other applicants, to take the Comprehensive
Practice examination to become a CSP.
This also extends the GSP
Retroactivity program. Graduates from current Qualified Academic
Programs (QAP) who graduated during the program's ABET accreditation
period can apply through the GSP program. The current definition of a QAP is
a bachelor's or master's degree holding program accreditation
as a safety or similarly named program by the Applied Science
Accreditation Commission of ABET (ABET-ASAC).
