First Quarter 2010
e.bcsp newsletter
worker cranberry
Greetings!

Welcome to the First Quarter 2010 BCSP E-Newsletter. We especially welcome those who hold the CCHEST credentials to the E-Newsletter. With BCSP fully administering the CCHEST para-professional credentials, it was deemed worthwhile to consolidate our two E-Newsletters into one.

The good news is our E-Newsletter will go out more than one time a year. The initial plan is one in the First Quarter and one in the Fourth Quarter.

Please send us feedback about our new format. It's our ongoing goal to improve and make this publication essential reading.

New Changes, New Challenges, New Beginnings - Letter from the Board President
Samuel  J. Gualardo, CSP
Growth is measured in a myriad of ways; from marks on a doorway to document a child's height through the years to taking a company from an idea in a garage to a multi-national corporation. BCSP, having been in the professional certification business for more than 40 years, has seen a steady climb from a simple idea to the gold standard of safety, health and environmental certifications and designations. Even through the bad economy of 2009, BCSP has had phenomenal growth in our certifications due in no small part to safety professionals recognizing the needs and benefits of our certifications.

Acquiring the CCHEST family of certifications was the first step in expanding and diversifying our active certifications. The Board continues to review "like certification" opportunities with potential announcements down the road. Additionally, the Board and the BCSP management team are spearheading a review of our organizational structure to ensure we are running as optimally as possible.

The staff and the Board have been working tirelessly for the last couple of years to implement a new certification management system tentatively scheduled for late 2010. This quantum leap in how BCSP administers certificate and designate holders as well as those individuals in-process is urgently needed to facilitate our growth. Once activated, the new system will foster greater connectivity and interaction with the ability to access more information quickly and easily. For example, with the new system credential holders will be able to manage their continuance of certification points entirely online.

Other new beginnings on the horizon include a new home for BCSP, as the staff has nearly outgrown the current facilities. The existing building has been in existence for 30 years and has served BCSP well. However, a new modern structure will increase our production and professionalism. More details on the new BCSP home will come in the Fourth Quarter e-newsletter.

As you can see, BCSP and the Board of Directors are committed to maintaining quality and professionalism while growing the business in ways in which our credential holders benefit.

Big things are happening at BCSP now and in the foreseeable future. Stay tuned.

Career Center on BCSP website
Finding the perfect SH&E employee - and the perfect SH&E job - just got easier
BCSP announces its newest offering to safety professionals and companies alike - a Web-based career center that connects job seekers with prospective employers in the safety, health and environmental industry. The new job board, powered by career services leader JobTarget, can be found at www.bcsp.org.

"Our organization promotes safety, health and environmental industry knowledge, professionalism, and excellence," says Thomas Adams, BCSP Executive Director.  "Launching an online career center for credential holders in our field - available all across the world - is a natural extension of that mission."

BCSP's employment marketplace, like other JobTarget-powered career centers, distinguishes itself from generalist job boards in a number of ways. These include:
  • a credential holder concentration meaning companies posting jobs must require one of our certifications or designations and job seekers posting resumes must be a credential holder;
  • a highly targeted focus on employment opportunities in a certain sector, location, or demographic;
  • anonymous resume posting and job application - enabling job candidates to stay connected to the employment market while maintaining full control over their confidential information;
  • an advanced Job Alert system that notifies candidates of new opportunities matching their own pre-selected criteria;
  • access to industry-specific jobs - and top-quality candidates - often not seen on top job search sites.
"Niche job boards, like the one we've designed for BCSP, are an ideal way to recruit top candidates," says JobTarget CEO Andrew Banever. "Our customized career centers also attract new members - both individuals and businesses - to organizations such as BCSP. That helps drive participation in conferences, professional development workshops, award programs, and other exclusive benefits."

The New Library of Safety Practice
New Online Resource for Study
Although BCSP does not loan out its' books, every volume in our 1,000-volume library has been read by professionals and found to be relevant to the broader practice of safety. Whether your interest is in occupational safety, fire protection, ergonomics, system safety, security, environmental protection, or construction, our new online directory called the Library Of Safety Practice (LOSP)can provide you information on books and texts related to your own practice or other practice areas.

Candidates for any of BCSP's certifications may use the LOSP to provide insight on information related to specific areas, as outlined in the respective examination blueprint. If you are studying for an examination and you know you are weak in certain blueprint areas, use the LOSP for information on recognized publications related to those areas. You can elect to buy the publications, or find them through public interlibrary loans. Remember, content in BCSP examinations is not based on any particular book or text.

Experienced safety practitioners can use LOSP to find information for upgrading personal or corporate libraries. In addition, BCSP welcomes recommendations for publications which ought to be added to our library. A future update to the LOSP may include a way for safety practitioners to comment on the books we maintain in our library.

Credential Holder Search
BCSP and CCHEST Certification and Designation Holders Directory
One of the most useful features on both the BCSP and CCHEST website is the Certification and Designation Holders Directory. From here, you can search for a wide variety of holders of our certifications and designations.

You can search by first and last name, city, country, US State and certification/designation. Employers can search to verify whether or not an individual who claims they've earned a certification actually has done so.

Also available is the Unauthorized Use PDF. BCSP and CCHEST take swift action against those who misrepresent themselves as holding our certifications.

Jay Jamali Honored as a Lifesaving Hero
Distracts Felon with a Gun, Administers First Aid
In January 2009, Jay Jamali, CSP, was teaching a safety class in a San Jose parking lot when a San Jose police officer was attacked during a traffic stop. The assailant was an alleged felon who had managed to take away the officer's gun and started shooting.

Jamali, while wearing an orange vest and hard hat for the class, yelled at the shooter distracting him long enough for the officer to get to safety. The alleged felon drove off and Jamali provided first aid until additional police arrived on the scene.

In October 2009, Jamali was honored as a Lifesaving Hero at the Alameda County Heroes Awards put on by the Bay Area chapter of the American Red Cross. He was also awarded the Simpson Silva Citizen's Award by the San Jose Police Department.

David MacCollum Inducted into Safety and Health Hall of Fame International
Award presented at 20th annual Construction Safety Conference & Expo in Chicago
David MacCollum, CSP, was inducted into the Safety and Health Hall of Fame International on February 17, 2010.

MacCollum is considered a pioneer for his efforts in protecting workers from a wide range of hazards. He is credited with writing engineering design standards for tractor rollover protection in 1956 and 1957 while he and his wife were living in Oregon. MacCollum is also the author of four safety related books, "Construction Safety Engineering Principles" (2006); "Building Design and Construction Hazards" (2005); "Construction Safety Planning" (1995); and "Crane Hazards and Their Prevention" (1993).

"One of the biggest reasons for my hall of fame induction is because I've reduced safety hazards to five basic principles that prevent accidents from happening," MacCollum said. "Let's look at what we're designing at the time it's being designed to eliminate all hazards before they ever start. Design something that is hazard-free and eliminate the problem."
