THOUGHTS FROM THE PRINCIPAL
THE BEST GIFT IS GIVING

Over the weekend, my sister-in-law Natalie posted the following on facebook - "What was your favorite holiday gift as a kid?? Mine was Donnie and Marie Osmond doll set with a cardboard theatre complete with little microphones. I still remember waking up and seeing it under the tree."

The response she received was amazing. People remembered bikes, big wheels, books, snoopy watches, tea sets, cabbage patch dolls, etc.  My favorite gift was a pair of skiis I received when I was about 12. I know it was a HUGE stretch for my parents but having my own Rossignol's and not having to rent was a dream come true for me.  I think it was also the first time I recognized the power of giving. The joy on my Dad's face when I looked up to thank him after I saw the skiis under the tree was pretty amazing. He was so genuinely happy to see me happy and I remember becoming cognizant that it is just as amazing to give as it is to get!

Over the years, I have tried to concentrate on the opportunity to give that the holidays bring.  For me, the holidays are a time to appreciate, acknowledge and spend some time with the people who light up my life.  At school, we can feel the excitement building among the children and we are so proud of how they have encouraged us to remember to give to others via the food and toys for tots drives this week.  I try to remember that although I have had 44 holiday seasons, the children in my life have had relatively few holiday seasons.  It's still magical to them and it's pretty darn exciting!    Gloria Estefan sings a beautiful holiday song called "Christmas Through Your Eyes".  I love the lyrics and thought I'd share a little part of them with you here:

I wanna see Christmas through your eyes
I want everything to be the way it used to be
Back to being a child again thinking the world was mine
I wanna see Christmas, Christmas through your eyes

Whatever your faith, however you celebrate at this time of year, I urge you to take some time to see the holidays through your child's eyes. While you are at it, take some time for reflection and consider how to give the greatest gift of all - YOURSELF - to those around you.  See you in January!

HI-5 RECYCLING REMINDERS

The Hi-5 program is going great so far! You can drop off your Hi-5 anytime school is in session.  The drop off location is to the left of the main building behind the gate. Just come in and ask for the key!  We just have a few reminders for you from Michael Locey who is serving as our superstar Hi-5 parent volunteer this year.

  • Please make sure that these items have the HI-5 stamp and are properly cleaned and prepared (no caps).
  • Please use separate bags for glass, aluminum, and plastic.
  • Plastic bottles no larger than 1 liter or qt.
  • No wine or liquor bottles
  • No milk product bottles (plastic)
  • Coco water cans separate

The goal is to reduce our trash in our homes and our school through recycling.  The money raised will be used to further our eco-friendly programs. Thank you for bringing us your Hi-5 products.

PREKK CREATE PHOTOSTORY
ABOUT THEIR FEELINGS

Our youngest KPS students recently completed a unit about their senses and emotions. As part of that project, they collaboratively worked on a photostory project which you can view here:

PREKK Feelings Photostory

Guaranteed to make you smile! Thanks to Robin, Carla and Laura for working together to bring this project to life. I was in with the kids when they saw it for the first time and it was delightful to see their faces light up when they saw themselves on screen!

GRADE 2 NEWS

What does it mean to be healthy?  How do we stay healthy?  How healthy are the world's children?  These are some of the questions the students in 1st and 2nd grade are looking at in their Healthy Children inquiry.  The students are learning about the importance of eating a balanced diet by studying the food pyramid.  They are seeing that they need a variety of good foods from the different food groups.  We have kept fruit and vegetable diaries for a week so the students could see if they were eating enough everyday. We are also studying the different parts in our bodies and how they function.  We exercise everyday to keep our hearts strong so we can be fit and healthy.  Next, we will reach out to help other children and their families in far away countries stay healthy with a wonderful program called "Read to Feed."
