THOUGHTS FROM THE PRINCIPAL
On October 24th, people in 181 countries came together for a day of environmental action. Some feel that 350 is the most important number in the world--it's what scientists say is the safe upper limit for carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
At Kaua'i Pacific School, we want our children to become exemplary stewards of sustainability. We were lucky enough to have Ivory from Project 350 explain the challenge and the project to our students in Grades 3-6. Their teachers, including Marine Science teacher, Captain Paul, helped extend thinking about this important topic. Students cut grass to show 350, melted ice in the shape of 350 to simulate rising water levels, spoke on the radio with Ron Wiley and drew blue lines on our school building. The blue lines represent 1 meter which is the level the water will rise if we do not lower the co2 levels to 350 in the near future.
THE MOST EXCITING PART
In December at the United Nations Climate Change Meeting Copenhagen, the world's nations will meet to agree on a new climate treaty. We are especially excited about this as we have just learned that KPS parent Tom Lieber (Dad of Leaf in Grade 5) has been invited to this United Nations Climate Change Meeting in Copenhagen to share his painting titled "Blue Heart" which was inspired by a lecture from Project Kaisei declaring Blue Heart as the true name of our ocean. Leaf will be accompanying his dad and will be able to share his first hand account of the climate conference as
it unfolds. Tom will be taking brochures from the school, the calendar and art projects along with Kaua'i Organic Coffee, Tea, Chocolate, Rum and Jams. We are brainstorming ideas of other things we can send that represent our student's hopes and dreams are for a sustainable future. If you have any ideas, please pass them along to Christine, Tom or Lisa!

PARENTAL SUPPORT/ VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR THE FILM FESTIVAL
As many of you know, the film festival is our MAJOR FALL FUNDRAISER. Each year we need to raise about $150,000 to continue to offer tuition assistance and to stay afloat. This money comes from our two main fundraisers and our Annual Giving campaign. In order to make the Film Festival successful, we will need EVERY FAMILY to help in some way. This could take many forms:1. Make a significant donation to sponsor a workshop or screening. See Lisa or Lyle if you are interested in this.2. Attend the Kick-Off Event on Friday, November 13th at Common Ground. You can buy tickets in the school office. 3. Help us sell tickets to the Kick-Off Event. See/Contact Lyle or Lisa if you can help with this. 4. Sign up to help during the event as follows:- Friday evening at Common Ground in Kilauea we need volunteers to be ticket takers at the gate, theater staff, prep cook and buffet hostess.
- Saturday at KCC in Puhi and Sunday at Common Ground in Kilauea we have 3 time shifts (morning, midday, evening) and we need box office staff and theater staff for each shift.
You can sign up in the office or contact Lyle directly at 652-3734.Mahalo for all your support and amazing volunteer spirit!

HI-5 RECYCLING BACK IN FULL SWING AT KPS Kauai Pacific School
is proud to announce the re-opening of the HI-5 recycle center. Families are
encouraged to bring their HI-5 plastic, aluminum, and glass to school beginning
next week October 19, 2009. Please make sure that these items have
the HI-5 stamp and are properly cleaned and prepared (no caps). Ask your
children to tell you how to know which items are HI-5 and how to prepare the
items (they have all been trained by the County Recycling Director).
Please use separate bags for glass, aluminum, and plastic. The goal is to
reduce our trash in our homes and our school through recycling. The money
raised will be used to further our eco-friendly programs.
