THOUGHTS FROM THE PRINCIPAL

We're thrilled to begin our school year working together filled with expectations, hopes, dreams, fears and a confidence in the educators to handle our children with care. Those that join KPS for the first time and even those moving to new grade levels, start with some "butterflies" as change makes us all a little nervous. The community of students, parents, and educators quickly surround each child, and very soon, KPS is a home away from home.

I hope you have all had a wonderful summer and that your family is rested and ready for our first full year as Kaua'i Pacific School!  The staff has spent the last two days exploring and discussing our inspirations, mission, core values, 21st century teaching and learning and Digital Storytelling.

Today we had a terrific professional development  experience via Skype with Jason Ohler who is a Digital Storytelling Expert. Teachers are even blogging about their learning experiences!  Over the next three days, we will have several more collaboration meetings, work on getting our classrooms ready and attend and a storytelling workshop with Kumu Mauli Ola who is a storytelling expert!

We would like to thank Lyle Robinson, Honey Sanson, Scott Nemeroff & Joseph Fiorilli for making sure we had some good snacks these past couple of days. We appreciated the treats! We'd also like to thank Chris Jaeb for letting us use the beautiful facility at Common Ground for our workshops!

I am so inspired by the energy of our teachers! They are a joy to work with! We can't wait to see all the students - the campus just isn't the same without their laughter, hugs, and smiles!

COMMUNITY WORK DAY
Saturday, August 15th from 9:00 a.m. - 12 noon

Join us as we finalize some small projects in preparation for the student's arrival next week. We need help with some general maintenance & organizational tasks. Michael Maroney has been working on many of the bigger projects over the past few weeks but he could use some help from the community! We will be organizing the back yurt, the storage sheds, the recycling area and the attic above the office. Teachers will also need some help in their classrooms. All volunteers are welcome - this is a great way to get some volunteer hours under your belt and it's fun to work alongside everyone else!  Wear grubby clothes, bring a water bottle and any tools you might have. We ALWAYS need a couple of trucks to take things to the dump at the end of the day.

NEW POSITIONS & NEW FACES AT KAUA'I PACIFIC SCHOOL

Each year brings a new opportunity to further strengthen our amazing teaching staff. This year, we have moved some of our teachers into new positions and brought on some new faces to better serve our students.

Laura Check will be moving into the Early Childhood Program as a teaching assistant to Carla Bissell. As many of you remember, Laura spent about 18 months as our first grade teacher several years ago. She also has several years experience as a pre school teacher from Menehune School in Hanalei.  Although we will miss her in the office, we are excited to have her back in the classroom.  The office will be staffed on most days by parent volunteers!

Ryan McGill will be our After School Program Leader and our primary substitute teacher.

Robin Avina will become our math specialist teaching 1st, 3rd and 6th grade math. She will also be our technology specialist which means she will teach all the students technology and provide support to the teachers with their inquiry projects.

Christine Bandsma will be rejoining the faculty after a five year absence! Christine will teach the 5th and 6th grade and serve as our garden teacher. She attended UC Santa Cruz, receiving a BA in Psychology and a Multiple Subject Teaching Credential and began working on her Master in Education, then spent a year working in Indonesia. Upon returning she began a 10 year stint focused on outdoor and experiential education, first working on a research vessel for The Orange County Marine Institute. Christine moved to Kauai eight years ago to be near family. She has worked at Kauai Arts and Science Academy and Kula Elementary teaching the upper elementary grades. Her strength and focus is getting kids out of the classroom and into the world for an authentic learning experience. Christine loves to play in the ocean, canoe paddling and spending time outdoors with her family.

Sam Alfiler will be joining our staff as our new music teacher. Sam is a recent graduate of Oberlin College with a degree in Music Education and a minor in Chemistry. Raised on Kaua'i, Sam was actually once the student of Kumu Mauli Ola. Sam has recently served as musical director for Hawaii Children's Theatre for several shows. Sam is eager to teach the children keyboarding and ukulele while strengthening their vocal skills.

Joel Guy will be our Digital Media Mentor this year! Joel has extensive experience as a professional videographer and recently spent several months working on Oahu for Mina Morita to help her create short movies about issues facing our islands. Joel has lived on Kaua'i for many years and will bring an amazing perspective & expertise to our overall program.

Noah PotteryELECTIVE PROGRAM
The fall electives will start the first week of September and run through the end of November. The classes are held every Wednesday from 12:45 - 1:45. Sign up sheets will be sent home the first day of school. So far our classes will include:

Drama - Jennifer Downs
Handwork - Angie Ell
Hula - Kumu Mauli Ola
Advanced Music Workshop  - Kirk Smart
Gardening - Laura Check
Digital Media - Paul Clark & Joel Guy
SCHOOL T-SHIRTS

New school t-shirts will be available at the Potluck - each child will be given one t-shirt compliments of a generous donation from our new Board President Lyle Robinson and her family. We recommend that students purchase a second shirt since they will now have PE twice a week since they need to wear their shirts on PE days.  School shirts will cost $12!

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

KPS is looking for a few kind-hearted souls with "green hearts" who can help us with the following:

1. Coordinating Monday Market (which we'd like to move to Fridays!)
2.  Coordinating the Hi5 program which will include checking the Hi-5 area regularly and working with the class teachers to organize the weekly Hi-5 trips to the recycling center at Common Ground.

Contact Lisa Mireles if you are interested in helping out with either of the two projects this year.
KAUA'I PACIFIC SCHOOL RECEIVES DIGITAL STORYTELLING GRANT FOR 2009-2010

As many of you know, KPS was awarded a $45,000 School of the Future Grant from the Hawaii Community Foundation and the Hawaii Association of Independent Schools. We will receive this same amount every year for the next five years as long as we are making adequate progress on our grant!

We are using the grant funds to improve our teaching and learning  with a focus on storytelling using digital tools.  Most of the grant ($20,000) is geared towards professional development. About $15,000 is earmarked for technology equipment.  We have already purchased iPod Touches, Flip Mini Video Cameras and more traditional Digital Cameras for student and teacher use. The rest of the funds are being used to fund a part time technology support teacher (Robin Avina) and a digital media mentor for the teachers and students (Joel Guy). We are thrilled about this grant as it will help us boost the 21st century literacy skills of our students!
PaintKPS NAMED 2009 ARTS EXCELLENCE SCHOOL BY HAWAII ARTS ALLIANCE ON OAHU!

We are pleased to announce that Kaua'i Pacific School was selected to receive an Arts Excellence Award 2009, for its support of the arts and an arts-integrated education at the Elementary School Level.

An Arts Excellence Award will be presented to our school in the amount of $1,000.00, funded by the Hawai'i Arts Alliance Arts License Plate Fund.

Congratulations to our arts-based specialty teachers, our arts based elective teachers and our lead classroom teachers for the collaborative efforts to integrate the arts as much as possible into our program!

COMMUNICATION AT KPS

KPS has several mechanisms in place to encourage effective home to school communication.

Our primary means of communication is via our RENWEB password protected portal. On this portal, you can see the most up to date events, announcements, the calendar, homework, a directory, attendance etc. We highly encourage you to log into RenWeb and  try it out! Log in information was sent home in your back to school packet. Our school code is KE-HI in case you can't find it!

A second method of communication is this newsletter which will be sent out at least once a month via e-mail.

Teachers will also be sending home regular communications and the office will send home  periodic subject specific e-mails and information flyers as needed.

Finally, don't forget to check our web-site regularly!
