Shaughnessey Earth DayDear Kaua'i Pacific Ohana,

Sometimes everything just clicks. Such was the case yesterday during our Earth Day Celebration.  From the amazing show of parent support to the creative activities generated by Kumu Mauli Ola, Captain Paul and Denise to the presence of the Kanuikapono children, it was a stellar experience.  We reached out, served our community and made a difference.  Even the weather cooperated!

One of our new core values is "Exemplary Stewards of Sustainability".  We want our children:

  • Contributing to 'green' communities
  • Developing deep connections between man and nature
  • Honoring oneself and one's environment

It was heartwarming to see our entire school ohana come together to embody this core value in a very visible and meaningful manner. Denise sent me an e-mail last night that captured how I think most participants felt, so I thought I would share it with you here:

Hi Lisa,

What a wonderful outing to celebrate Earth Day. I think we all agree that combining the two schools on a regular basis is a gift to all involved. I simply could not resist the urge to bathe myself in the day. We did a very good thing today and I feel really good about it.

Denise

Thanks to everyone who participated!  It was a magical event!

REENROLLMENT FORMS DUE APRIL 30th!

So far, only a few students have reenrolled for the upcoming school year. Needless to say, we cannot have a school without students! Please let us know if you have other plans for your child for next year as soon as possible so we can plan accordingly. If you are returning next year, we highly encourage you to turn in your reenrollment forms by April 30th. Forms were sent home on April 6th with your child.  If the $300 is an issue at this time, please bring in your signed contract and we will work with you to figure out a payment plan.  We are looking forward to having all of the children back. They are truly such a joy to be around!

K/1 NEWS - KINDERGARTEN AND FIRST GRADE EXCHANGE WITH KANUIKAPONO A GREAT SUCCESS

As part of our efforts to build bridges and reach out into the greater Kaua'i community, we have scheduled a series of exchanges with students from Kanuikapono, an Anahola based charter school with a great emphasize on project-based learning. Last week, I had the chance to drop in a for a bit during the exchange. It was a delight to see all of the children so engaged and making new friends. They ate together, danced together and learned many new things together. Thank you to Carla, Ryan and Kumu Mauli Ola for organizing this event. A special thanks to our Kanuikapono hosts for making us feel so welcome.!
Imara ArtKAUA'I MUSEUM ART SHOW

Last Friday, our art teacher Denise brought back all of the work that had been displayed in the Kaua'i Museum Student Art Show. As she started to go through the pieces, she was thrilled to discover another ribbon! Kaihalana ArtKaihalana Locey, a fifth grader, won 2nd place in the 2D category.  We couldn't believe it! Remember that there were only 9 awards island wide. This meant that our little school won 3 of the 9 awards. We  announced Kaihalana's award at our school-wide assembly.  About an hour later, Denise walked in and informed me that she had discovered yet another winner!!! Imara Joroff-Levy, another fifth grader had won 3rd place in the 3D category. This means we nabbed four of nine awards!  Imara and Kaihalana join Malia Searby and Sam Goldberg as ribbon winners! Congratulations to our budding artists! We are so proud of all of you!

Kauai Pacific SchoolSTORYTELLER JEFF GERE ENTERTAINS KPS STUDENTS!

Thanks to the Garden Isle Arts Council, KPS students were treated to an extremely talented and entertaining storyteller last week.  Jeff Gere had amazing energy. He had the children riveted during the entire presentation.  Jeff is a nationally recognized storyteller who regularly makes presentations to school. We feel very lucky to have had him come and work with our students.

However, we have learned that one or two children found his final story to be a bit scary. We apologize if there were any aftereffects of the final story with your child.  Some of the teachers in the room did feel that he might have gone a little too far with the last story at the very end for some of the younger children.  We have since had some excellent discussions amongst ourselves after about fairly tales, scary stories and moral development.  Kumu Mauli Ola shared that there is an ongoing debate amongst professional storytellers. One group feels that we must expose children to scary storiess. They argue that "scary" stories such as fairy tales, myths and fables have been shared with children for centuries and that they provide an appopriate mechanism for children to feel and express fear.  Others feel that life is scary enough for kids and there is no reason to expose children to stories for which they are not ready. Interesting stuff and I personaly plan to do some more research in this area especially since we are planning on integrating more storytelling into our Language Arts program next year.

KPS OPEN HOUSES

This May, we will hold two open house events for prospective families. Although we will advertise on the radio, in the papers, and with a postcard campaign and flyers, the success of these events relies on our current parent community reaching out to their friends in the community. Let your friends know about the Open House, direct them to our web-site and tell them how much you love our school!

The open house events will be on:

Tuesday, May 19th from 10:30 a.m. - 12 noon
Wednesday, May 20th from 5:30 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.

Both events will include a tour, brief presentation and question and answer session.

Don't forget that through May, we are offering a $500 tuition reduction for every family that enrolls as a result of your direct referral.

We are also looking for a few brief testimonials from parents to put on the web-site and in our new promotional material. If you are so inspired, please e-mail Lisa a short testimonial when you get a chance. Thanks so much!

GRADUATION 2009
Thursday, June 4th at 10:00 a.m.

Our annual graduation celebration will be held on Thursday, June 4th at 10:00 a.m. at Anini Beach Pavilions. Our entire community comes together for a festival of song and dance to congratulate and celebrate with our 6th graders . Graduation is one of our many traditions. If you have not attended one in the past, you are in for a treat. ALL of our students from grades K-6 perform and they have already started  to prepare in their Hawaiian Studies and Music classes!  To put on an event of this magnitude requires everyone's participation. We need a potluck coordinator, a flowers/greens coordinator, someone to coordinate set-up, someone to design the graduation program, a dressing room coordinator and someone to coordinate clean-up. Please call or e-mail Licia McDonald at larsensgetaway@yahoo.com to sign up.

RAISE CONSCIOUS CHILDREN

"Children are the living messages we send to a time we will not see." - John Whitehead

Are your children concious or unconcious? When we talk about unconcious children or people, we are talking about those who are unaware of - and care little about - how their actions and words might affect others. It's easy to assume that self-centered folks are simpley ill-natured, but that's not necessarily true. Many of them have unwittingly eclosed themselves in an "it's all about me" cocoon so they can hide from their uncomfortable feelings. Some very wonderful people hide from emotions, which renders them unconscious to the feelings and needs of people around them as well.

We can help our children become conscious by acting that way ourselves! They grow up imitating us, so when we perform small acts of kindness, they will follow suit. Let them see you offering apologies, opening doors and helping others. Invite them to participate. Notice when they initiate acts of kindness on their own, and praise them for it.

Are any of us perfect in this area? NO! But we can be conscious of our imperfections and keep trying!
