 Dr CathyDear All!

I am pleased to say that our work has grown to be much more than just providing veterinary aid to animals in need. The grand opening of our Latin America Surgical Training Center is but one great testament to that. It also demonstrates our commitment and the value we place on providing high quality training to veterinarians. Such training serves a long term vision as well as solution to address animal welfare issues worldwide.

Whether it is during a training session or on a regular spay/neuter campaign, we continue to inspire current and future generations of veterinarians. We thank all of our sponsors and volunteers for being part of that inspiration.

Winter Deployments

We had a few teams deployed this winter. They provided not only sterilization campaigns for small animals but equine welfare!

In support of our Equine Welfare Project in Granada, Nicaragua, we provided veterinary services to horses in three different areas. See pictures

We operated  a pilot project on the Caribbean island of St. Eustatius. There we aided local efforts control the roaming donkey as well as small animal population. See pictures

And we provided a successful large scale sterilization campaign in Sosua, Dominican Republic. See pictures

Training Center Grand Opening

In December 2011, we officially opened our Latin America Surgical Training Center in Granada, Nicaragua. The opening ceremony was attended by members of the veterinary community as well as local officials and friends to show their interest and support.

Also in attendance were our great friends from Fondation Brigitte Bardot. They helped us cut the ribbon and celebrate this great milestone. Fondation Brigitte Bardot has been a key supporter of this initiative and we share the success of this program with them.

The primary goal of this facility is to help Latin American veterinarians gain surgical experience in an environment of high quality, one on one instruction. Equally important is providing excellent patient care for the thousands of community animals that will benefit from the services provided.

The facility is equipped with the latest technology to help provide high quality patient care and will provide free spay/neuter surgeries for the thousands of street dogs in the area.  Heska, VSSI and Dentalaire made donations of equipment to support this endeavor.

Training Center in Action
Since its grand opening we have held a training session each month at our facility. Over 20 Nicaraguan veterinary students have participated in the program so far.

Training sessions incorporate a lecture/group seminar as well as hands on learning; including surgical practice with one on one instruction from a veterinarian.
