Greetings!

Susan PasemanI hope you have had some time this summer to enjoy the sun with family and friends. World Vets is all about sharing with friends. It starts with the simplest of all friendships: between animals and humans, and ends with a team of people bonded forever by the experience of giving.
I am extremely grateful to be able to thank you for supporting our efforts to alleviate the suffering of animals. Whether you have donated your time and skill as one of our team members on a project, send us supplies, or choose to support us financially, we value your friendship!

Sincerely,

Susan Paseman

Return Trip to Granada
little white dog

This past May, World Vets sent it's first team to this colonial village in Nicaragua. The response of the community was overwhelming with people and their animals lined up down the side of Casa Lupita, the building where our clinic was held. On August 8, 2009 a second veterinary team returned. This successful project resulted in 136 surgeries performed and over 100 additional animals treated for various medical conditions. Plans are already in the works for a return trip to this area of great need.

New Projects in the Works

Several upcoming projects are in the final planning stages. We will need many volunteers to make these projects a success. Maybe now is the time for you to experience how being a World Vets volunteer can leave a pawprint on your heart forever. Details will be available soon.

Dr Stacy Steele Walks 100 miles for Animals

Most days you will find Stacy Steele working as a veterinarian at Ocean Shores Animal Hospital in Washington state. But recently, she could be found on a one-week, one-hundred mile walk around the Olympic Peninsula. The walk, not originally organized as a fund raiser, inspired Dr Steele to use the event to raise money for her favorite animal charities. Over $1000 in pledges and donations was raised! World Vets thanks you Dr Steele.

Paulynne Bellen-Leighton
HR Manager

Dr. Bruner and Dr. Thomas
My trip to Nicaragua with world vets has been an exciting and life changing one. I grew up surrounded by animals ranging from dogs to turtles back home (Philippines).I always had a dream of becoming a veterinarian but like most people, dreams are somehow swayed by circumstance, family pressure or plain old youth zaniness. Today, I am an HR Manager who fills her desire to work animals through volunteering in local shelters and rescue groups.
During the trip, I sanitized the instruments and monitored and cared for the animals post-surgery. The group was very supportive and encouraging despite my limited know how in animal care and handling. They taught me how to handle and prep animals and to my surprise and delight, even involved me in actual surgery. It was one of the most nerve wracking yet fulfilling and exhilarating experiences I have felt in my life!!! Not to mention the fun and amazing excursions such as sailing, zip line, beach and horseback to name a few made this trip even more wonderful. It gave me a chance to see and explore a new place, experience an adventure and meet great people. Above everything else, it also awakened the strong desire to pursue my dream. Vet school is a long arduous journey even close to impossible for someone like me not in the sciences or in the field. However, each journey starts with a small step and my first was my trip with this group. My next step is my first day of school this coming fall for my pre-requisite courses for vet school.

Team SJDS

San Juan Del Sur, Nicaragua
July 2009

A team of 16 traveled to this Nicaraguan fishing town to offer free spays, neuters and medical treatments to the local dogs and cats. This trip provided the opportunity for 6 veterinary students to learn to perform complete spays and neuter procedures during the week long project. A vacant building was converted into a make-shift surgery ward where 189 animals received surgery and care by our volunteer veterinary team.
