World Vets Newsletter June 2009
www.worldvets.org
Greetings!

Susan PasemanSchool is almost out, but there will be no summer break for many of our volunteers. World Vets members are busy preparing for several international trips. Four teams of veterinarians, technicians and assistants will be heading off this month to offer supplies and aid to animals in areas where great need has been expressed.

We would like to take this time to express our sincere appreciation for each of our members. Only with your loyal support, can World Vets continue to send veterinary care where animals so desperately need help.

Thank for joining with us . Together we can make a difference!

Sincerely,

Susan Paseman
Vice President

Pilot Project Goes to Little Corn Island

World Vets project leaders will travel to Little Corn Island, Nicaragua to work with local animal advocates. Our leaders will work with other veterinarians and local contacts to evaluate the condition of the animals on the island and work on developing a strategy which will allow us to send a full volunteer veterinary team down at a later date. We also expect to spay and neuter many animals on this trip.  It is our hope that this will lead to ongoing projects at this location creating a sustainable solution to the animal suffering there. Future trips to the island will be open to all volunteers.

Return Trip to Granada, Nicaragua

World Vets will be returning to Granada this August. Although our recent trip to this location was very successful, time ran out and many animals there still need our help. Our plans to send a second team down began before we boarded our plane to return home.  The team selection process is  now underway. We still have openings for veterinarians, techs and vet students. For more information about this project, click here.

Team Leaving for San Juan del Sur

Team San Juan del Sur is packing and getting ready to head south. This group of volunteers will arrive on this island in Nicaragua on July 25, 2009. The focus of this project will be a field spay/neuter clinic. With six veterinarians, we hope to make a large impact on the dog and cat overpopulation problem. World Vets plans to send teams down on a regular ongoing basis.

Rare Opportunity to See Hidden Embera Tribe

In September, World Vets will send 4 team members to Panama to do a remote spay/neuter blitz with our friends at Spay Panama. This adventurous project will take the team deep into the rainforest to work with several indigenous communities including the Embera tribe, only accessible by piragua (canoe). Dr. Bruner and Dr. Thomas
Dr. Bruner is a mixed animal veterinarian who graduated in 1973 from WSU. As a former assistant professor of clinical medicine and a small animal emergency practice owner, he enjoyed his first trip with World Vets to Granada, Nicaragua in May of 2009. He had a great time with the team and absolutely loved the experience! Dr. Bruner is already looking forward to travelling, volunteering and participating with World Vets again. In October of 2009 he and his wife, Dr.Thomas, will be going to Romania to help
with their spay and neuter project.

Amanda Thomas DVM

Dr. Thomas is a 2000 graduate of Colorado State University, a small animal emergency and critical care clinician, a former hospital owner - and after her trip to Nicaragua - a lifetime fan and member of the World Vets organization!

"The trip to Nicaragua was challenging on all levels - mentally, physically, socially, professionally, and arachnaphobically (that would be me). Our group of vets and technicians came from all over the United States, and literally, overnight, we were transformed into a sound and solid surgical team with a plan.  We could see right away that we were helping people and animals very much in need of our care and skills, in a country that may be stunningly beautiful but has next to nothing.  We shared our veterinary skills with Nicaraguan vets, zookeepers and caregivers and made terrific friends with our American associates. By the time we left, we had a great feeling of philanthropy, and  knew we will gladly be doing this again and again, and again."

The Granada Team

Granada, Nicaragua
May 2009

A team of 11 traveled to this unique colonial city in Nicaragua. The days were long and hot, but well worth it with a total of over 300 animals helped during the one week trip,  including 50 horses. 121 dogs and cats were sterilized and many others received treatment for various medical conditions. The team brought down medical supplies and worked with several volunteers who live in Granada.
Check out the team blog to read all about some of our trips.
