Important Updates from Oak Grove & DCSD

Oak Grove Foundation Welcome Party - Tonight - 7pm!

This year we plan to make the Oak Grove Foundation, and therefore our school, even stronger. To do that, we need you! Your talents, energy, ideas, skills and time. A little means a lot and your help will make it possible for the Foundation to continue to support Oak Grove and make it the best place for our kids to learn.

Please join Dr. Neely and the OGF Board for our Foundation Welcome Party this evening, Thursday, September 20th at the home of Mark and Reed Richardson at 7:00pm. You will have the opportunity to meet new people and learn more about the Foundation. We look forward to seeing you there! Please click here to access invitation and let us know whether you can make it: http://www.punchbowl.com/partypage/d5b002ee5939c693.

Sincerely,

Parent Round Table Meetings - with Updated Dates
Throughout the month of October, Dekalb County School Distric (DCSD) will host a series of roundtable meetings for parents. At these meetings, parents can learn more about the status of current issues faced by the district, as well as hear about new initiatives launching in the 2012-13 school year. DCSD families also will have the opportunity to ask questions.

These are open forums for all DeKalb County parents, and they replace the previous parent advisory committees. Parents are encouraged to submit their questions in advance to lillian_m_govus@fc.dekalb.k12.ga.us.

The meetings will take place from 7 p.m. until 8:30 p.m.

Tuesday, Oct. 23 - Redan High
Thursday, Oct. 25 - Lithonia High
Monday, Oct. 29 - Dunwoody High

2013-2014 School Year Calendar Survey
The (DCSD) Calendar Committee has released two calendar options for public
review.   The first, a traditional calendar, reflects a start date of Aug. 12 and an
end date of May 23. DCSD has historically adopted the traditional calendar
model.  The second, a balanced calendar, begins the school year on Aug. 5 and ends
on May 29, but has an additional week of vacation in each semester.

Both calendars have 180 school days for the students and an additional 10
days for the teachers, comprised of nine work days and four two-hour
teacher conference nights.

Among other considerations is a weekly one-hour early release in order to
allow for professional development for all teachers and administrators.

The calendars are available for public comment until Sept. 26. Community
members may also participate in a brief survey to gauge the level of
support for each calendar as well as the early release day.

Update on ITBS, COGAT Testing and Gifted Identifcation

DeKalb County School District will administer the Cognitive Ability Test (CogAT) and Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS) to all first grade students as we have done in previous years. All students in grades 1, 3, 5 and 7 will participate in the following evaluation procedures:

*    All DCSD students in grades 1, 3, 5 and 7 will be tested for the Program for Gifted following the district-wide assessment schedule.
*    In October, the CogAT is administered district-wide to first, third, fifth and seventh grade students.  These scores provide data in the mental ability area for eligibility.
*    In October, the ITBS is administered district-wide to first, third, fifth and seventh grade students.  These scores provide data in the achievement area for eligibility.
*    In November, motivation and creativity rating scales (Renzulli) are completed on every student not currently identified as gifted, by the classroom teacher, in grades one, three, five and seven.
*    All first, third, fifth and seventh grade students must have a score in all four areas necessary for gifted evaluation.
