farm_schoolFarm To School Day - Peaches

DCSS Farm to School program logoThis month's DeKalb Farm to School Day will be on Thursday, May 17th and will feature locally grown Peaches. Nutrition and Wellness Committee members will be in the cafeteria encouraging kids to try peaches. We invite parents to eat lunch with their children. Last month, kids commented that the strawberries "tasted great and were really juicy and sweet."

The committee will provide interesting facts about peaches and students are encouraged to wear something orange that day. Please ask your child try a peach. You can pack peaches in their lunch or send 75 cents for them to purchase one as an a la carte item. If you have additional questions or would like to volunteer to help with the monthly event please contact Margaret West at mrh0@cdc.gov.

healthy_spotHealthy Spot Award Winner for April 2012

The Nutrition and Wellness Committee would like to recognize an outstanding Oak Grove Elementary Teacher that exemplify and role model healthy eating and exercise for our students each and every day. This month's winner of the Healthy Spot Award is 2nd Grade teacher Mrs. Albright. She was nominated because "she often integrates healthy lifestyle lessons into her teaching.logo for Nutrition and Wellness committee

For example homework problems in math often discuss adding and subtracting fruits and vegetables versus candy and cookies. She also tries to start the students' day with stretches and encourages healthy snacks in the classroom." Congratulations to Mrs. Albright for being such a great role model for our children.

If you observe other staff exemplifying such healthy behaviors, please consider nominating them by e-mailing Margaret West at mrh0@cdc.gov. Up to three faculty/staff will be recognized in May, so consider nominating your child's teacher today.
