Race to Nowhere...
The Lakeside High School PTSA is proud to be bringing the documentary, "Race to Nowhere" to the Lakeside Auditorium on Thursday, May 10th at 7 pm.
"Race to Nowhere" is a call to mobilize families, educators, and policy makers to challenge current assumptions on how to best prepare the youth of America to become healthy, bright, contributing and leading citizens. It is an incredible film about the challenges kids today have where they are bombarded by academic standards, they are competing for educational opportunities and juggling runaway schedules.
Please join us on Thursday, May 10th at 7 pm. Admission is free but you can reserve your seat by clicking here.
We look forward to seeing you there.

April Update - Instructional Technology Coach
It was a quick month with Spring Break and CRCT testing. I worked with 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades this month. This is the last focus time for grade levels this school year. I will be available to all grade levels for the month of May. I will continue to work on wrapping up projects with a couple classes, prepare for new equipment, and develop a technology implementation plan for the Fall.
Ms. Kaufman and Ms. Lee's classes are working on digital stories using PowerPoint. Most of the students are done writing their stories so we are working in small groups to complete the voice recording. The students are engaged with this project and excited to publish their work digitally. It was great to see students in Ms. Kaufman's class smiling as they completed their projects and eager to share them with classmates. The students did almost all of the work themselves with a few tutorials from me along the way. I demonstrated how to record their voices, add custom sound animation, and an example of the finished product. More classes are preparing to publish student writing using PowerPoint. I met with fourth grade teachers regarding their poetry units in May. We brainstormed the different ways students could publish poetry using digital stories. Ms. Clausen and Ms. Boykins have also expressed interest in doing this project with their students.
The voters also had some great use this month. A couple classrooms use them so often that they stay in the rooms. Ms. Clear used the voters for the first time with her fourth grade students. We planned a review for their science test. I assisted her in setting up the questions and also using the voters. It was a great way for her classes to review and they were actively engaged with the lesson. She is excited to use them again. Mr. McCarthy planned to use the voters with the fifth graders for a test review. Another use of voters this month was the staff CRCT training. Ms. Moore and I worked together to create the training. The goal was to make the training more exciting and show the staff the technology available in the building. It was a successful and fun.
Some other highlights from the month include more laptop and library computer use. Ms. Koepke's class used the laptop carts to create Fakebook pages for their Roald Dahl study. Fakebook is an interactive site created by ClassTools.net. It is a site purely for study purposes but allows students to interact virtually with other character pages. It is a challenging platform but her students enjoyed the lesson. It has been exciting to see an increase in laptop and library computer use. We are certainly trying to maximize our current equipment.
As the school year ends, it is time to set goals for next year. I am eager to improve our technology integration. I am working on technology implementation plans for the school as well as an iPad implementation plan. It is important to be organized moving forward, especially as we add more equipment. I will continue to work on these plans and research for teachers in May. I would like to add an Instructional Technology Coach blog in the future and improve our technology collaboration next year. I am thrilled to be a part of the technology growth at our school!
Thank you,
Katy Miller Instructional Technology Coach
