giftsAuxillary Staff Holiday Gifts
Dear Parents,

Each year, our teachers are showered with gifts as tokens of thanks for the amazing job they do teaching our children. It would be wonderful to recognize our non-teaching staff as well. We have an outstanding custodial, cafeteria, and office team at Oak Grove. If you would like to contribute towards gifts for these folks, please send in a gift card, cash, or check made out to Oak Grove Elementary. I will make sure that gifts are organized and evenly distributed.

Thanks So Much,
Laura S. Neely, Principal
guidanceGuidance at The Grove
I am pleased to announce all of the great things going on in the Guidance Department at Oak Grove. This month, I've been working with the students on 'Conflict & Resolution' strategies. Grades K - 2nd have been learning how to be responsible for themselves. Our lessons have been about the difference between tattling and reporting. Students listened to the story, "Don't Squeal Unless It's a Big Deal" by Jeanie Franz Ransom. They learned that you only tell an adult if it is a big deal. A big deal is when someone is hurt or in danger, you are being hurt, property is being damaged or a pet is being hurt. The other problems we discussed were "kid-sized" problems. These are problems that they can solve by using their words. We will talk more about using words the next couple of weeks.

3rd Graders discussed "What Bugs You?"... Our lessons have been about identifying and practicing effective communication skills and strategies to resolve conflicts. Students identified and shared a variety of things that annoy/disturb them (situations of conflict) and developed a list of solutions. We discussed many types of "Problem Solvers": 1-Taking Turns, 2-Compromising, 3- Laughing, 4- Apologizing, 5-Getting Help, 6-Avoiding, 7-Getting Help, 8-Postponing, 9-Empathizing, and 10-Sharing. We also discussed many types of "Problem Causers": 1-Getting Even, 2-Blaming, 3-Hitting, 4-Making Excuses, 5-Teasing, 6-Not Listening, 7-Name Calling and Put Downs, 8-Threatening, and 9-Bossing. We will talk more about using words the next couple of weeks.

4th and 5th Graders worked on resolving classroom conflicts by acting things out... Our lessons have been about solving problems on their own in a calm, non-confrontational way. We also discussed "Tips to Try": 1-Walk away, 2-Ignore It, 3-Laugh it off, 4-Talk-It-Out, and 5-Get an
adult.

Stay tuned for more......Mrs. Reeves!
pjGreat Bedtime Story Pajama Drive
The Kindergarten classes participated in a wonderful charity venture for the
holiday season called Scholastic Book Clubs "Great Bedtime Story Pajama Drive."
The children donated brand-new pajamas, all sizes from infant to adult. They collected 100 pairs of pajamas! Scholastic will pair the donations with books and then both are given to programs in the area for needy children.  For more info, click here to visit the website.
This was a wonderful opportunity for "our" children to be a part of the
best part of the holiday season, the "giving" part.

Dear Oak Grove Parents,

I hope this reaches you in good health and spirit. During the month of January, our students will be given the opportunity to learn, hear, and discuss various careers through classroom guidance.  The month will end with the grand finale Career Day.

The Counseling Department is so grateful for your efforts to assist with
educating our children about careers.  Thank you so much for volunteering your time to do this.  Career Day will be held on Friday, February 3, 2012 from 8:00 am - 12:00 pm.  As a guest speaker you will be asked to share your career, training, education requirements, and other pertinent aspects of your job to our students.  You will rotate between three to four classes and will speak for approximately 25 minutes each.  It is advised that you spend 15 minutes sharing your profession and 10 minutes for questions/answers.  Props are welcomed and audio/visual equipment is available i.e. television, DVD Player, SmartBoards, and LCD (limited; please request these items upon receipt of this letter).  Please complete and send me your Career Day form (click here to download) if you wish to volunteer.
It is the mission of our Counseling Department and school to fully meet
the needs of every child by giving them every possible resource available
for productive citizenship in the 21st century.  To this end I thank you
for your support to this educational experience and to Oak Grove School.
If you have any questions, please contact me at 678-874-7416.

Sincerely,

WOW!  The Oak Grove Foundation's Annual Campaign for 2011 has come to an end, and the numbers are amazing!  With your generous donations, we have raised $36,671!!  I am thrilled to report that 22 out of 30 classrooms reached at least 50% participation and earned $100 for their teacher to spend in the classroom.  Those classes are listed below.

Extra kudos go out to Mrs. Shafer's class!  Every family donated to the Annual Campaign and they have won $250 for Mrs. Schafer to spend on supplies, curriculum or equipment for her classroom.

It is a privilege to be involved at a school such as Oak Grove where our parents are so invested in the quality education our children receive here.  With the leadership and guidance of Dr. Neely and our School Council, I look forward to seeing some major action items from our Strategic Plan come to fruition.  On behalf of The Oak Grove Foundation, I'd like to extend a sincere "Thank You" for trusting us as stewards of your generous donations that help to ensure all of our Oak Grove students become Learners Without Limits.  We can't wait to see everyone at The Silent Auction on St. Patrick's Day!
