walkingSafe Routes to School

We've had a great turn-out for first semester  including 223 walkers this past Wednesday.  Even though the Walking Wednesdays are over for this semester, please continue to walk or bike to school - it's a great way to start the day!

The parent survey that you filled out earlier this year has been submitted to the National Safe Routes to School program and we will put a summary of the results in the newsletter as soon as we get them.

There are already several events in the works for the Spring, including a classroom challenge and another walking school bus neighborhood competition on Georgia Walk to School Day.  Look for more details after the holidays.

foundationFoundation's Capital Drive Continues
Wow! The first week of The Oak Grove Foundation's Capital Campaign is complete and we are off to an awesome start. If you have not made your donation yet, you have until Dec. 2nd. Only you and your family can decide the amount of your donation, but rest assured that EVERY donation dollar makes a real impact on our children's education here at Oak Grove.

Over the past year, OGF funded and facilitated a Strategic Plan for Oak Grove Elementary. An immediate impact of the plan is that the implementation of foreign language instruction is being investigated.  Look for more information from Dr. Neely toward the end of the year.

The OGF is also funding the position of Instructional Technology Coach to assist our teachers in bringing technology instruction to a new level at Oak Grove.Your monetary support will allow the plan to continue to be implemented as governed by our School Council.

toydriveToy Drive to Benefit DeKalb County Students
in Need

The School Social Work Department is pleased to annouce their annual holiday party and toy drive.

We need your help to make the winter holiday season joyous for students and their families who are in need.  Last year we were able to provide toys for over 400 children in DeKalb County schools.
Please consider bringing a new unwrapped toy for boys and girls up to 13 years of age.  Please place your donations in the box in the school office.  Toys will be picked up every Friday from now until December 9th and will be distributed on December 17, 2011 at the holiday parties.

If you have any questions, please contact Mary Ann Howard, the school social worker, at 678 676-2009.  Thank you so much for your assistance in this very special event.

Sincerely,

Mary Ann Howard

This is a great opportunity for parents across the county to get the
latest legislative information that affects our children and schools and
talk with our elected representatives about the many educational issues we care about.
REMEMBER! IT IS OUR LEGISLATORS AND SENATORS THAT DRIVE POLICY AND FUNDING FOR OUR LOCAL SCHOOLS!
  • Don't underestimate your influence: Legislators pay attention to the issues raised by voters in their communities.
  • Don't assume you need to be an expert in legislative advocacy:  You are the expert in knowing your child's educational needs and what support your family and community need.
  • Stay informed: Once the legislative session starts, thingshappen quickly. Often there is little notice before an issue comes up for
a vote. There will be times when a legislator needs immediate feedback from you on an issue and they don't usually get it!

Let your voice be heard on the issues that are important to you NOW!
