srtsCommunity Action - Safe Routes to School

Adding bike lanes on Oak Grove Rd. was identified in our Walking Safety Audit in 2009.  This has been an action item for the past two years and nothing has been done about it. To encourage the county to act, please call Patrece Keeter at the Dekalb County Transportation Division at (770)492-5281 and tell her that you want bike lanes on Oak Grove Rd.

Walking Wednesday Update

We had 171 walkers this Wednesday! That's good considering the cold and darkness. Please be aware that the next two Wednesdays will also be dark in the morning, so wear reflective vests and carry flashlights. There were a lot of cars parked along North Akin so remember you can park at the Oak Grove Methodist Church and walk from there.

farmCelebrate DeKalb's Farm to School Day
October 26th

DCSS Farm to School program logoIn celebration of October's National Farm to School Month, the Nutrition and Wellness Committee would like to once again promote the on-going effort in DeKalb to bring Georgia grown fruits and vegetables to our students. Last month's activities in the cafeteria around Farm-to-School were highly successful thanks to staff, parents, and students' participation.

This month's item will be Granny Smith Apples on Wednesday, October 26th. To continue to promote this event, the Nutrition and Wellness Committee will be present in the cafeteria encouraging students to try the item of the month on that day. The committee will also provide interesting facts about the item during the morning announcements the week before. If your student has a lunch account already set up, please encourage them to try the apples on this day. If your child brings lunch from home, you can pack apples on this day for him or her to eat or send 75 cents with them to purchase as an a la carte item.

Pictures of last month's event have been posted on the bulletin board in the main hallway outside of Mrs. Neely's office. Additional pictures will be taken and can be viewed on the Clubs and Committees section of the PTA website.  If you have questions or would like to volunteer to help with the monthly event please contact Margaret West at mrh0@cdc.gov.

GELPC Meeting Notes

This past Wednesday's Emory LaVista Parent Council (ELPC) meeting included information on the Georgia DOE's waiver request to exempt Georgia from the No Child Left Behind regulations.  Several Department of Education representatives, along with DCSS employees, explained how they hope to improve failing schools.

DCSS employees also gave an overview of the proposed SPLOST IV (Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax) projects.  We will vote on SPLOST IV on November 8.  The continuation of the one cent sales tax will allow funding for construction, renovation and other improvement projects for schools all over DeKalb County.  Henderson Middle School is a top priority on the list, and would receive $16 million dollars.

The ELPC speakers clarified these points:
1) If SPLOST IV does not pass this November is it unlikely that it will be placed on the ballot in 2012, due to the transportation SPLOST vote already scheduled for 2012.
2) If SPLOST IV does not pass this November, the school board reform legislation (which dictates that DeKalb's Board of Education will be reduced from 9 members to 7 members) will not go into effect.
3) DeKalb's current BOE is setting up a committee of community members and construction experts to ensure proper oversight of SPLOST IV dollars.

IDid you know...
...Ms. Spears' first grade students observed hatching small fry and drew
pictures of their observations? The Small Fry project is funded by proceeds from our after-school program.
...Mrs. Bolsen's and Mrs. Albright's students participated in Reader's Theater? Performances were recorded on the iPad so students could play it back and hear themselves reading fluently.  The students worked extra hard to read very fluently.  It was great to see these kids so excited about reading!
...Mr. Kuefler's class played soccer ball multiplication? This game combines learning multiplication facts with some fun physical skills ... a
game that really appealed to kinesthetic learners!
...Ms. Everett's Pre-K students harvested butter crunch lettuce, green beans and basil from our garden?  They had a "Green Food Tasting" and found a real live inch worm on the basil plant.  They took it inside and measured it.  It was exactly one inch!
...This week the fifth grade reading classes presented Book Club Projects? They focused on plot, theme, and symbolism in their presentations. The groups presented their projects in many different ways; dressed in costume, made Power Point presentations, created news shows, made animated computer presentations, and used other technology resources to present information about their book.
This was not only a reading project, but also had a focus on writing. Some of the students'  wonderful Literary Reviews will be highlighted on the Oak Grove Morning Show! They learned a lot and had fun doing it!

Stay tuned each week right here in our new Did you know... column to read more about the exciting learning happening at Oak Grove Elementary!

dcssSchool System Announces Initiatives to Ensure Transparency, Accountability and Effectiveness in Operations and Finances
The actions are a key component of Superintendent Dr. Cheryl L.H. Atkinson's 90-Day Entry Plan, which pledged to identify and correct critical issues facing DeKalb Schools.
The accountability initiatives include establishing a Citizens SPLOST Oversight Committee, a 12-member body of community representatives formed to provide oversight of SPLOST-funded construction projects and to report to DeKalb County residents on how SPLOST funds are being spent.
In addition to the Citizens SPLOST Oversight Committee, the School System also has recently implemented a number of internal operational and financial checks and balances, including: Independent Auditor, EthicsLine, and Purchasing Oversight.
