Participate in a Parent Roundtable
The DeKalb County School System is inviting all parents to participate in one of the Superintendent's parent roundtable discussions. These meetings are a part of the overall objective of the Superintendent's Ninety-Day Entry Plan which will be to listen, learn, and lead. The schedule listed on the DeKalb Schools website can assist all parents within the five district regions in deciding which meeting to attend.
Participate in Our Survey
The DeKalb County School System is re-establishing a strategic planning process and invites you to participate! We want to hear from you regarding what you want your public schools to provide for students, what the schools are doing well, and what challenges the schools and students face. Your input on the survey will be used to revise the district's strategic plan which is scheduled to go before the Board of Education for approval in February 2012.
The Community Engagement Survey will be available at the following link through Friday, September 30, 2011.

Walking Wednesday Update | | |
We had 246 walkers on Wednesday!

Get ready for International Walk to School Day!
It's on October 5th this year. Jeff Rader, Dekalb County Commissioner, will be joining us as well as Officer Obester and several other members of Dekalb County police.
We also could use some more help with the Walking Wednesday incentive distribution. It takes only 30 minutes on Wednesday; children often like to distribute the incentives so it's a good way to get them involved! Look on the PTA website (Clubs and Committees page) under SRTS for the sign-up genius form. |

Ninety-Day Plan | | |
Dr. Atkinson sworn in October 15th as Superintendent
As promised, Dr. Atkinson has developed a 90-day entry plan which lays out her 3-phase strategy for putting children first in every action implemented within the District.
Dr. Atkinson's immediate focus will be to engage in a set of activities that will allow her to gather information, assess the District's strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats, and create a working community network of parents, community leaders, contacts, and resources to engage stakeholders in transformation and accountability activities. According to Dr. Atkinson, "Keys to success are leadership and accountability. The overall objective of the entry plan is to listen, learn, and lead. Student achievement is our business and must be the central theme in all of our initiatives." In the first phase of the plan, Dr. Atkinson will conduct a personnel audit of the central office, which will occur over the next two weeks. Phase two of the entry plan includes auditing programs within divisions and departments. The final phase of the entry plan is to develop and present to the Board of Education and the community the Superintendent's Excellence for Education Plan. Dr. Atkinson's Excellence for Education Plan will be a strategy to improve educational achievement, internal operations, reporting, and accountability. Listening to and learning from internal and external stakeholders will be an integral part of the plan. At the conclusion of the plan, Dr. Atkinson will provide a summary outlining the findings and use them as a tool for future direction. "If we band together, keep our focus, and put Students First, there is no limit to what we can accomplish," explains, Dr. Atkinson. For more information regarding Dr. Atkinson and the 90-Day Entry Plan visit www.dekalb.k12.ga.us/superintendent. |

ELPC Meeting Update | | |
Dr. Atkinson, New Superintendent, Spoke at ELPC Meeting
At the September 21st Emory LaVista Parent Council (ELPC) meeting, our new Superintendent, Dr. Cheryl Atkinson, discussed her vision for DeKalb Schools. She emphasized her desire to include the community in her decision making. She plans to visit every school and meet with every principal, as well as engage teachers in fireside chats and parents in roundtable discussions. Technology is a major emphasis for her, and she would like to explore the possibility of every student to having a laptop computer. Her five guiding principals are: 1) Students must come first. 2) Parents are our partners. 3) Victory is in the classroom. 4) Leadership and accountability are critical to success. 5) It will take the entire community to ensure success. Click here to read Dr. Atkinson's full 90-day plan on the DCSS website.
