Strategic Planning for the School System | | Oak Grove needs parents to attend the very important meeting THIS Tuesday.
This is your chance to share your input in a huge variety of areas for future planning purposes in DeKalb County. The Oak Grove perspective is important to consider in the overall planning process in DeKalb County Schools.
Don't let this chance to participate and have Oak Grove "heard" pass you by. Please email Mrs. Neely if you plan on attending (LAURA_S_NEELY@fc.dekalb.k12.ga.us).

Reflections Art Program Deadline
| | |
Deadline is October 3rd, 7:45am
Do you love to draw, write stories, take photos, dance, makevideos, or compose music? Now is your chance to get involved in "reality art." The PTA sponsored Reflections art program gives students an opportunity to express their talents in several mediums. This year's theme is "Diversity," which is all around us at Oak Grove.
Each category has different guidelines that need to be followed very carefully. In previous years, we have had to disqualify some great entries that were larger than allowed, that lacked an artist's statement, or didn't meet other requirements - don't let this happen to you! Reflections information and forms are available on the Georgia PTA website:
http://www.georgiapta.org/leadership-reflections.html. We will also make the paper entry forms available as we talk about the program in the classrooms.
Just last year, Oak Grove's own Sarah N. submitted and entry that went on to the National finals. Way to go Sarah!
Our deadline for entries is October 3rd, by 7:45.am. We will collect the entries on that morning in the library. We encourage students to take their entries to the library prior to October 3, so as to avoid the last minute rush. We love original art, and together our OG family can create our own Reflections gallery.
Contact Kathleen at marmarmom@gmail.com with questions, or if you have not submitted your name as a volunteer.

Nutrition & Wellness Committee Recognizes DeKalb's Farm to School Day
Farm to School Day is September 21st
Working with Dexter's Farm, the DeKalb County School Nutrition Program is bringing Georgia grown fruits and vegetables to the students of DeKalb. Farm to School is a national initiative that provides students fresh fruits and vegetables through the connection of in-state farmers.
Each month, the DeKalb School Nutrition program will highlight at least one Georgia grown fresh fruit or vegetable in the cafeteria. To help promote this event, the school's Nutrition and Wellness Committee will be present in the cafeteria encouraging students to try the item of the month on that day. The week before the event the committee will also provide interesting facts about the item during the morning announcements. This month's item will be Gala Apples on Wednesday, September 21st. If your student has a lunch account already set up, please encourage them to try the apples on this day. If your child brings lunch from home, you can pack apples on this day for him or her to eat or send 75 cents with them to purchase as an a la carte item.
Pictures of the monthly event will be taken and can be viewed on the committees section of the PTA website at www.oakgrovepta.org. If you have additional questions or would like to volunteer to help with the monthly event please contact Margaret West at mrh0@cdc.gov |

Walking Wednesday Update
Remember: Walk Left, Bike Right
For our 2nd out of 8 Walking Wednesdays we had 232 walkers! This is quite an accomplishment compared to our baseline of 75 walkers before the program started in 2008.
Children who walked should have received a yellow reflector for their backpacks. It reminds students to "walk left, bike right." When you are teaching your children how to walk safely, when there are no sidewalks remember to walk facing traffic- this way they can see the cars that are coming and get out of the way if need be. The opposite is true when biking: go the same direction as traffic. Don't forget that you can park and walk from the Oak Grove United Methodist Church. It only adds an extra 15 minutes to your day and the benefits to your child are invaluable (plus it's 15 minutes less that you need to exercise)! |

Terracycle: Oak Grove Earns 2¢ Per Item
Capri Sun and Honest Kids Pouches & Elmer's Glue Sticks
Oak Grove will earn TWO CENTS every time we recycle a Capri Sun or Honest Kids pouch and any Elmer's glue bottle, stick, tube or jar by partnering with TerraCycle (www.terracycle.net). The new black recycling bin for the Capri Sun pouches is located in the cafeteria by the entrance door closest to the stage. Feel free to save your pouches at home and deposit them in the bin. Remind your child to recycle his or her empty pouch at the end of lunch in the new bin.
And if you have empty Elmer's glue sticks, bottles, jars or tubes at home, please feel free to bring them to school and deposit them in the copy/ work room area in the large box under the work table.
To help our teachers collect used glue sticks, we need 40 small boxes - think shoebox size. If you have some boxes available, please bring them to school and place them on the stage on the right as you walk in.
We will earn 2¢ per item, with your help, how easy can it be!
