Dear Friends,
As earthquakes, tsunamis, storms, and other catastrophes strike vulnerable communities around the world, we can't help but to turn our attention to those in need. The very items that we throw away in this country - from last year's inventory of clothes to new medical supplies discarded by our hospitals - are the very items that can help a hurting family recover.Read more.
Sincerely,
Jeremiah Denton

In the Philippines... Storm affects millions
Tropical Storm Ketsana struck the Philippines, leaving over 4 million affected. Some families lost everything.
The U.S. responded immediately. Over 3,500 U.S. troops arrived Manila to assist with the relief. Helicopters, humvees, and equipment arrived to help distribute the hundreds of thousands of pounds of relief aid that arrived from not only U.S. agencies, but from organizations around the world. The response and generosity from the U.S., and around the world, is the positive side of this situation. The downside is that there are still over 600,000* families affected. There are over 40,000 families in shelters who have lost thier homes, their clothes, everything. (*Source World Health Organization). And another storm has just hit. Here's what we're doing to help... |
 In the U.S....
At the Admiral Denton Foundation, we have been busy every day coordinating the next phase of response for families who have lost everything in the Philippines. The Balfour Corporation has donated an entire truckload of brand new clothes and flipflops. In partnership with Operation Schoolhouse, our partner project affiliate, we are sending the items in the next two weeks to help the families. In Mobile, AL dozens of volunteers (see PHOTO) from a Catholic organization called Couples For Christ (with Filipino members) volunteered to prepare blankets, and other care items (donated by individuals from Mobile Alabama) and medical supplies (donated by Rotary Club District 6110, Medical Supplies Network, Inc., Tulsa OK).
In the Philippines, we receive regular updates from a reliable network of individuals and organizations from the Rotary Club in Manila, Rotary Club of Makati Central, the Red Cross, and an advisor to the Philippine Military on Disaster Relief. We are covering every detail to provide a coordinated approach to this recovery phase, which most likely will have fallen off the news networks and television screens by the time this email reaches you. Around the World...
In Ecuador, critical medical supplies reached one of the remote villages along the Peruvian border. The items are being distributed as we write. In the Philippines, a home has just been finished for a family of four (sponsored by the Admiral Denton Foundation thanks to our supporting board member) (PHOTO at right). The next home is underway. In American Samoa, we are looking at initial development plans to coordinate recovery items for tsunami victims. In Iraq, we work with U.S. military units in the Diyala Province to secure the distribution of school supplies from Operation Schoolhouse -and plan for the next shipment to help the children. In Afghanistan, we have the beginning of a long term system underway to handle future humanitarian aid. It is a complex situation in Afghanistan, and it will take complex arrangements to develop long term solutions. These stories, and more, will appear in our upcoming newsletter.
