Happy New Year! We wish you and your families a happy and healthy 2012.
In this issue of the newsletter, we start the new year by answering some of your common health questions, we provide information on Molar Pregnancy, share a great story on 3D/4D ultrasounds and in our Healthy Living section, we highlight another enterprising patient with a focus on health and nutrition. Our "Meet the Staff" this month introduces Roslynn Figueroa, a receptionist for The Rubino OB/GYN Group. And you'll find a new interesting "Medical Fact".
As always, we will continue to provide topics that are current, informative and important to your good health.
Sincerely,
Robert J. Rubino, MD and Staff

Your FAQ's, Answered
|
It's a new year. And time to take control of your health. It's a great time to remind patients to partner with their doctor to monitor their medications, keep up with appointments and exams and take action with changes in your personal health that may be signals for something more serious. Following are some common FAQ's from patients in our practice and our responses.
Why do I have to get my birth control renewed? It's important for you to visit your doctor to get your birth control renewed. Your blood pressure needs to be checked to ensure it is at normal levels and it is important to discuss any side effects or health concerns with your current prescription.
Does brand vs generic matter ? Sometimes a whole lot, sometimes not at all. Generic drugs are only required to be 80 percent identical to the name brand drug. In some situations it does not matter - both versions of the drug will do the job just fine. In other situations patients may have side effects and/or a different response on a generic that they would not have on the name brand. Patients know their bodies well, we look to them for reporting side effects and how well a particular drug works for their condition. This feedback helps build our clinical experience on name brand and generic drugs.
Do I have to sleep on my left side during my pregnancy? This is not a requirement although we may strongly advise that it is a good idea for clinical situations such as chronic hypertension, or long standing diabetes, etc. The theory is that it facilitates blood return to the heart and uterus in someone with a compromised vascular system.
My pap was normal so I have no chance of any female cancers, right? This is a common misconception. The pap only checks for pre-cancerous conditions of the cervix and for presence of the HPV Virus ( the virus that causes cervical cancer). The test is not meant to check for uterus or ovarian cancer. Abnormal uterine bleeding is the most common warning sign for the former, bloating and urinary frequency are common signs of the latter. You can find additional health related FAQs right on our website: FAQs. If you have a question that you still need answered, please speak to your doctor.

Molar Pregnancy
|
In addition to common health conditions, time to time we will cover less common conditions to continue to educate patients on women's health and demystifying diseases that some may have heard about but do not know the details.
What is a Molar Pregnancy? In a molar pregnancy, the fertilized egg does not grow as it should. A genetic error causes abnormal cells to grow and form a mass of tissue. What are the types of molar pregnancy? There are two types of molar pregnancy - complete and partial. The mass in a complete molar pregnancy is made up of all abnormal cells that would have become the placenta in a normal pregnancy. There is no fetus. In a partial molar pregnancy, the mass contains the abnormal cells found in a complete molar pregnancy and a partially developed fetus. What are the symptoms of molar pregnancy? The most common symptom is vaginal bleeding during the first trimester. Other signs of molar pregnancy, such as a uterus that is too large for the stage of the pregnancy or cysts on the ovaries, can be found by your obgyn. If your obgyn suspects a molar pregnancy, he or she may order a blood test that measures the level of a hormone call human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG). This hormone is produced by the placenta during pregnancy or molar pregnancy. How is molar pregnancy diagnosed? Not all molar pregnancies are diagnosed ahead of time and is only confirmed after receiving pathology results from the D&C (Dilation and Curettage). Ultrasound may be used to find out whether you have a molar pregnancy. If a molar pregnancy is found, a series of tests will be done to check for other medical problems that sometimes occur along with a molar pregnancy. These problems might include preeclampsia (a condition of pregnancy in which there is a high blood pressure and swelling) and hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid gland). If a molar pregnancy is not detected on ultrasound, it may only turn up on the pathology report after a miscarriage. Molar pregnancies typically miscarry. Detection often is noting a pregnancy that doesn't develop a heart beat; therefore, a molar pregnancy is suspected and confirmed by pathology of the tissue. How is molar pregnancy treated?Molar pregnancies are treated with a D&C (Dilation and Curettage). Routine tests for hCG continue for about 6 months to 1 year. These tests can determine whether you need further treatment. How common are molar pregnancies? About 1 in 1,500 pregnancies in the United States is a molar pregnancy. If you're under age 20 or over age 35, or if you've had a previous molar pregnancy, your chances of having a molar pregnancy are higher. Women of Southeast Asian descent also seem to have a higher risk of molar pregnancy. It can be scary and emotional to experience a molar pregnancy, however as long as you get proper treatment, you're unlikely to have any long-term physical consequences.

The Miracle of 3D/4D Ultrasound |
This remarkable story was submitted from a patient of The Rubino OB/GYN Group, Tammy Poteet Karelus, on the accuracy of 3D/4D ultrasound. "I'm a patient of Dr. Robert Rubino's I thought I'd share this little story with you all and I wanted to say thank you to the entire Overlook office Staff. You are all amazing! Thank you!
For expectant parents who have ever wondered just how accurate those 3D ultrasounds really are, check this out...
At first, my husband and I were on the fence about getting the 3D ultrasound because of the cost. But we decided why not? Its our first baby. I took the picture on the right last week and I kept having this feeling like I'd seen it before. Turns out, I had ... 17 weeks before my daughter was born. " |
Healthy Living: Balancing Home and Work |
In the spirit of the New Year, we reinforce our resolution to share the stories of our enterprising patients. This month, we highlight Margaret Conforti and how her home based business deals in two kinds of green, one you help pay the bills with, and the other you consume.
As with many successful business stories, Margaret is a stay at home mom that was looking for supplemental income. When introduced to a product from a family member, she liked the concept so much, she decided to start her own business. As with most moms, Margaret appreciated that good nutrition takes time and planning. As a part-time cooking instructor for children ages 2 through 8th grade, and mother of 3, Margaret was specifically attracted to Juice Plus+ because she realized her family was not getting the minimum of fruits and vegetables recommended.
Margaret shares, "As conscious as I thought I was about my family's nutritional health, I was surprised that we were not meeting the minimum recommendations. As a cooking instructor, I am always incorporating fresh fruits and vegetables into my recipes - for other families this is a way to get the same benefit".
This product helps bridge the gap between the 7 to 13 servings of fruits and vegetables recommended by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the nutrition you actually get with busy schedules. It is a concentrated, whole food based product made with 17 different fruits, vegetables and grains.
This business venture enables Margaret to meet new people, work within the comforts of her home and dictate her own schedule.
