Medical Fact

 "I didn't know that!"
Stress contributes to heart disease, high blood pressure, strokes, and other illnesses in many individuals. Stress also affects the immune system, which protects us from many serious diseases.
DECEMBER2011

The holiday season is upon us. As always, we are very grateful to all of our patients that have continued to trust us with their health care in 2011.

In this issue of the newsletter, we discuss Endometriosis, highlight our Enterprising Patients, introduce delicious gluten free snacks and provide holiday shopping options. In our Healthy Living section, we discuss managing stress during the holidays. Our "Meet the Staff" this month introduces Randy Kalinowski - the new Controller for The Rubino OB/GYN Group. And you'll find a new interesting "Medical Fact".

We would like to wish everyone a very happy holiday.

If there is topic you would like covered in our newsletter, please e-mail us at newsletter@rubinoobgyn.com.

As always, we will continue to provide topics that are current, informative and important to your good health.

Sincerely,
Robert J. Rubino, MD and Staff

Endometriosis - What Is It?saitta

Endometriosis is an often painful disorder where tissue that normally lines the inside of your uterus - the endometrium - grows outside your uterus. It most commonly involves your ovaries, bowel or tissues lining your pelvis.

Displaced tissue continues to act as it would through a normal menstrual cycle - thickens, breaks down and bleeds - but has no way to exit the body and becomes trapped. Scar tissue and adhesions can  form and bind organs together which can cause pain during your period.

Symptoms
- Painful periods
- Pain with intercourse
- Pain with bowel movements or urination
- Excessive bleeding
- Infertility
- Fatigue, diarrhea, constipation, bloating or nausea, especially during your menstrual cycle.

Endometriosis can be mistaken for inflammatory disease, ovarian cysts and irritable bowel syndrome. Tests to detect endometriosis include a pelvic exam, ultrasound and laparoscopy to look inside your abdomen.

Causes / Risk Factors
- Never giving birth
- Family history of endometriosis
- Unusually long periods
- History of pelvic infection

Treatments
Typically, endometriosis can be treated with medications, hormone therapy or surgery.

If you are experiencing any of the symptoms indicated above, please make an appointment with one of our doctors for an exam.

Meet Our Enterprising PatientsEnterprisingPatients

A little over a year ago, we launched a section of our website called "Enterprising Patients".
It was created for patients in our practice with thriving and successful businesses to network with other patients and visitors to our site. Since then, it has really taken flight. We have expanded the page and receive frequent requests to add additional listings to the site.

The Rubino OB/GYN Group openly supports entrepreneurial women and the business ventures they have created. Over our numerous years in practice, we have met the most remarkable women - smart, ambitious, creative, professional, experienced executives. Many of these women are moms and successful enterprising business women.

The goal of the Enterprising Patients section is to create a useful forum to make connections and provide resources to others.

We encourage you to visit the page - there may be a service or product that you might be interested in using, especially during the holidays!

If you would like to add your business or service to this page, please e-mail us at network@rubinoobgyn.com.

Gluten Free Snacks - A Delicious OptionEnterprisingPatients

We often hear from many of our patients who have gone gluten-free in their diets. One of Dr. Rubino's family members has come up with a great option for gluten-free snacking.

El's Kitchen, Inc, founded by Eleanor "El" Smith, is a Connecticut based gluten free food manufacturer. El's (real) kitchen is always full of friends, but one of them couldn't enjoy El's snacks because of worries about gluten. And bland gluten-free snacks frustrated El who wasn't about to serve them to her guests. She had already launched a successful line of spice rubs (and knows something about taste), so she flavored some gluten-free snacks with them to please everyone.

El's Bagel Snaps, is the first gluten free bagel chip on the market that has the texture and crunch of the real deal. The Medleys Snack Mix combines the snaps, gluten free pretzels and other delicious, crunchy items and is flavored with a zesty coating.

Everything is all natural, gluten-free, dairy-free and has no trans fat; it's full of Omega-3s; it's high fiber, and has whole grains. Most importantly, it's got taste. Taste you'll crave - whether you care about wheat or not.

El's is working its way down to New Jersey. In the meantime, you can find her products at Linda's Diet Delites in Clark, NJ and G-Free NYC on the Upper West Side. You can also buy these delicious snacks online at www.elskitchen.com. Use promo code NHCEL and get 20% off your purchase!

Healthy Living: Managing Stress for the Holidayshealthyliving

The holiday season is often a time of high stress with the whirlwind of gift buying, holiday parties, pressure from advertisements and family gatherings.

The true meaning of the season is based on love, giving and joy yet most people find the holidays very stressful. This stress can be caused by trying to do too much (managing day to day life while living up to expectations for the holidays), eating, drinking and spending too much, family issues, loneliness and Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).

There are ways to cope with the pressure of the holidays and minimize holiday stress. It's important to keep in mind, holiday stress is predictable - we know there is a beginning and an end. Some stress busters include:
Setting priorities - decide what traditions offer the most positive impact - pick your favorite activities and really enjoy them. If you rush through them because you are checking it off your list, you are missing the whole moment.
Simplify - typically we set our own high expectations. Others will not care as much if you bake more of the same cookie or print labels for your Christmas cards vs. hand-writing them. It's ok to take the simple route.
Eat wisely - try to maintain healthy eating without giving yourself an excuse to indulge at every holiday party. It will only have you feeling run down and guilty. Everything in moderation.
Streamline your get-togethers - try to keep the family and friend outings at a manageable number.
Cope with loneliness - surround yourself with people and consider volunteering with those less fortunate.
Set a schedule - be realistic on what you can accomplish and write it down - and stick to it! Ensure you leave time for exercise.
Above all - promise yourself some relaxing holiday moments. Take deep breaths and actually experience the magic of the season.

If you feel your stress has become unmanageable, please make an appointment with one of our doctors.
