Medical Fact
"I didn't know that!"
A fetus acquires
fingerprints at the age of three months. When only a small fraction of the way through its development, a fetus will have already developed one of the most unique human traits: fingerprints. Oddly enough, those fingerprints will not change throughout the person's life and will be one of the last things to disappear after death.

We hope you are enjoying this last month of Summer!
In this issue, we discuss topics you might not yet know about: Botox as a treatment for female discomfort, a new health trend and Dr. Rubino's local involvement.
In our "Meet the Staff" this month, we highlight Wanda, one of our receptionists in our West Orange and Summit offices. And you'll find a new interesting "Medical Fact".
As always, we will continue to provide topics that are current, informative and important to your good health.
Sincerely,

Vulvodynia May Be Treatable with Botox |
In a recent article published on August 1st in the Dermatology Times, it was reported that patients suffering from vulvadynia may benefit from Botox injections.
The article noted vulvodynia is difficult to diagnose. It is a chronic pain syndrome with symptoms including persistent vaginal discomfort and/or burning pain. It is usually triggered by sexual activity or tampon insertion. The condition is poorly diagnosed. Currently, the pain is often treated with pain medication, anti-depressants, acupuncture or surgery. It has been shown that chronic vulvar pain may involve a clinically relevant dermatologic condition.
Botox has been shown to cure some patients with the condition by reducing the local nerves' ability to sense pressure. The studies surrounding the use of Botox for treatment of vulvodynia are conflicting. Not every patients responds the same to Botox. In cases where it has been used as treatment, it has been very successful. Additional broader studies are necessary to determine how effective Botox may be for this chronic condition. |

Healthy Living:
A Standing Office Has Many Health Benefits |
There has been a lot of buzz in the news lately surrounding the many benefits of standing at your desk. It has actually become the latest craze, triggering a new market of "stand-up desks."
The concept behind the idea is that the human body was meant to stand, not sit. Standing is better for the back, it strengthens leg muscles, improves circulation and helps balance. And, it burns more calories than sitting. Standing and walking squeezes valves in the leg veins, pushing blood flow upward toward the heart, whereas sitting restricts blood flow.
A recent study shows that standing might even help you live longer by lessening the risk of cardiovascular disease. Standing can also keep you more alert.
There are suggestive ways to stand - relaxing your knees and balancing your weight on both legs - rather than falling into the habit of shifting your weight and causing soreness in your back, neck or knees. It might take some adjusting and perhaps a new desk purchase, but the benefits seem to be plentiful. |
Meet the Staff |

After working in corporate America for a few years, and enjoying the experience in the financial industry, she decided to return to the medical field.
Wanda enjoys experiencing with new moms the happiness they feel as they enter into the world of parenting. "I love seeing their faces when they have their 38 week ultrasound".
