Medical Fact

 "I didn't know that!"

Our eyes can distinguish up to one million colour surfaces and take in more information than the largest telescope known to man.

FEBRUARY2011
The winter months are slowly coming to an end with Spring peaking around the corner! We wish all of our patients a Happy Valentine's Day and hope you enjoy the day with loved ones.

This month, we discuss a new study revealing the inaccuracy of MMR leading to Autism. We talk about the effects snow can have on you physically and in our Healthy Living Section, we reveal the effects colors can have on your health. We also share some local news about the launch of the Hat Tavern in Summit.  Our "Meet the Staff" section highlights Kerri Anne, a medical technician with The Rubino OB/GYN Group. And don't forget to read this month's medical "I didn't know that!"

If there is topic you would like covered in our newsletter, please e-mail us at newsletter@rubinoobgyn.com.

As always, we will continue to provide topics that are current, informative and important to your good health.

Sincerely,

Study Linking Vaccine to Autism is Untrue

A new investigative report by the British Medical Journal, posted on January 5, 2011, states that the 1998 study linking the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine to autism was a fraud for financial gain.

This new report shows how the study's author altered facts about his patient's medical histories so they would fit better with his claims. "A great deal of thought and effort must have gone into drafting the paper to achieve the results he wanted: the discrepancies all led in one direction; misreporting was gross," wrote BMJ.

It was revealed in one case, a child who apparently showed symptoms within 2 weeks of receiving the MRR vaccine actually had symptoms a month before he even received the vaccine.

There has been similar discrepancies in the study and the timing of symptoms.  Further, patients that became part of the study were sent to the doctor by an anti-vaccine campaign called "JABS." Later the study's author attempted to use it as a basis for a class action lawsuit against MMR makers, but the suit was dropped due to lack of evidence.

The study was retracted from the journal that published it, and the other 10 authors listed on it withdrew their support after it was published. The study's author was also stripped of his medical license. The claims made by the study have never been able to be reproduced in any subsequent experiments. Despite the retraction, vaccination rates are still down and infection rates up.

Snow Effects

These brittle temperatures and relentless snow storms can really have a physical toll on the body. Among many, two common effects of the cold weather are frostbite and injuries from shoveling snow.

Frostbite is a medical condition where "localized damage is caused to the skin and other tissues due to extreme cold." Typically it can be seen in body parts farthest from the heart and in large exposed areas.

Factors that contribute to frostbite include extreme cold, inadequate clothing, wet clothes, wind chill and poor circulation caused by tight clothing or boots, cramped positions, fatigue, medications, smoking, alcohol use, or diseases affecting the blood vessels.

To treat frostbite, you should slowly warm the area by going inside, covering with blankets and warm clothing. If frostbite is further progressed, it might require medical attention.

According to HealthDay News, snow shoveling injuries cause an average of 11,500 injuries and 100 deaths per year, effecting both adults and children. The most common injury is the back, followed by arms, hands and the head.

Heart problems are also common, more typical with adults age 55 and older and among men.  Freezing temperatures contribute to the cardiovascular demands of snow shoveling. The heart's workload is increased, especially if it is not conditioned for strenuous shoveling, adding to the chances of a heart-attack in at-risk individuals. Chest pain in women is atypical. If you are experiencing chest pain while shoveling, stop immediately and seek medical attention.

It is important to stretch before shoveling, be careful not to lift too much snow at one time, bend your knees when scooping the snow and take breaks. If you are at high-risk for heart issues, consult a doctor prior to shoveling.

During these winter months, it is important to bundle up in , wear appropriate outerwear to keep your body warm and be extra cautious with shoveling and outdoor activities.

Healthy Living:  The Effect of Colors

colorsColor can have a tremendous effect on your health, mood, feelings and behavior. There is a true psychology to how colors impact your day to day life.

Several colors have universal meaning: Colors in the red family (red, orange, yellow) symbolize warmth - which can evoke emotions from comfort to anger. Colors in the blue family, or cool colors (blue, green, purple) can evoke feelings from calmness to sadness.

Ancient cultures used colors to heal and is still used today in holistic and alternative medicines. Color analysis has been interpreted in hundreds of ways, but there is a general consensus on the meaning of the following colors:

Red: action, confidence, courage, vitality

Pink: love, beauty

Brown: earth, order, convention

Orange: vitality with endurance

Gold: wealth, prosperity, wisdom

Yellow: wisdom, joy, happiness, intellectual energy

Green: life, nature, fertility, well-being

Blue: youth, spirituality, truth, peace

Purple: royalty, magic, mystery

Indigo: intuition, meditation, deep contemplation

White: purity, cleanliness

Gray: sorrow, security, maturity

Black: death, earth, stability

In medicine, the pale green/blue color of operating rooms and scrubs were originally chosen to nutralize the color of red when operating. Many psychologists believe the choice of blue and green scrubs had a "sedative" effect on surgeons, keeping them calm during the high stress operating room setting.

By surrounding yourself with colors that reflect health, happiness and energy, you can positively influence your mood and behavior which can lead to a healthy perspective and healthy living.
