Medical Fact

 "I didn't know that!"
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 18 million courses of antibiotics are prescribed for the common cold in the United States per year. Research shows that colds are caused by viruses. 50 million unnecessary antibiotics are prescribed for viral respiratory infections which has led to an increase in antibiotic resistance. Often times, the best medicine is no medicine.

Periodontal Disease & Pre-Term Labor
According to the Academy of General Dentistry, women with periodontal disease are at three to five times greater risk of pre-term birth than those who are periodontally healthy.

It is not completely clear how periodontal disease affects pregnancy. Research suggest that the bacteria that causes inflammation in the gums can actually get into the bloodstream and target the fetus, potentially leading to premature labor and low birth weight babies.

Periodontal (gum) disease is an infection of the gums and bone, caused by plaque,a sticky film of bacteria that adheres to teeth. Plaque forms constantly on teeth and can build up if it is not removed through daily and regular professional cleaning. The bacteria in plaque produce toxins, that can irritate your gums. Three out of four adults are affected by periodontal disease some time in their lives. Pregnant women are especially susceptible to periodontal disease.

Researchers evaluated periodontal disease in more than 850 women before and after they gave birth and discovered that periodontal disease may be responsible for up to 18 percent of pre-term births. Periodontal disease may be as detrimental to pregnancy as smoking or alcohol abuse.

The best strategy is to prevent the development of periodontal disease. For women who are planning to get pregnant, a thorough periodontal exam and appropriate treatment should begin prior to pregnancy. For women who are already pregnant, meticulous oral hygiene, frequent professional cleanings and visits to your dentist may be helpful.
Stress Management

Managing your stress is very much in your control. In fact, the foundation of stress management is realizing you control how you react to daily life.

Managing stress is all about taking charge of your thoughts, your emotions, your schedule, your environment, and the way you deal with problems. The ultimate goal is a balanced life, with time for work, relationships, relaxation, and fun - plus the resilience to hold up under pressure and meet challenges head on.

Try to identify the stress triggers in your life and learn coping mechanisms to deal with your stress. There are several basic tactics to stress management:

1. Avoid Unnecessary Stress: learn how to say "no"; avoid people who stress you out; take control of your environment (ie. if TV stresses you out, turn off the TV); avoid discussing topics that stress you out; streamline your to-do list (drop items that aren't "necessary")

2. Alter the Situation: Express your feelings; be willing to compromise; be more assertive; manage your time better

3. Adapt to the Stress by Changing Your Expectations and Attitude:  reframe problems; look at the "big picture"; adjust your standards; focus on the positive

4. Accept the Things You Can't Change: focus on things you can control; look at the upside; share your feelings; learn to forgive

5. Make Time for Fun and Relaxation: set aside time daily to relax; spend time with positive people; do something you enjoy every day; keep your sense of humor

6. Adopt a Healthy Lifestyle: eat well; exercise daily; avoid smoking and excess alcohol; reduce caffeine and sugar; get enough sleep

These tactics should help you take control of your life and avoid stress in the new year.

Healthy Living:  What Are You Eating?

When choosing which food you want to eat, you typically choose by the description of the food. When you buy bean dip, you expect it to be made from beans. And when you buy guacamole, you assume it is made from avocados. But is it?

The Truth: Many foods on the market contain only a fraction of the ingredients you'd expect. Take guacamole for example - specifically guacamole "dip". Packaged guacamole often lacks real avocados but rather contains fillers and chemicals, including modified food starch, soybean oils, locust bean gum, and food coloring.

If, on the other hand, you were to eat a real avocado, which is loaded with fiber and heart-healthy monounsaturated fats, you would be doing your body a service. Look for the real stuff in labels or take control of the ingredients and make it yourself at home.

This same concept can be applied to many packaged foods available today. Yes, often it is about convenience, but try not to sacrifice healthy eating for a quick solution. Take a look at the packaging and understand the ingredients.

Fast food is another buyer beware scenario. Unlike packaged-food manufacturers, fast-food and sit-down restaurants don't typically rely on chemicals to enhance flavor. Instead, they pack in sugar and sodium, adding extra calories. So you still should ask the question, or order a simpler menu item, like grilled fish, where you know what you are getting. And if there is a sauce, ask for no sauce or sauce on the side to control what you consume.

Being aware of what you eat can make a significant difference between a healthy diet and a diet filled with chemicals and manufactured ingredients.
