Medical Fact
"I didn't know that!"
In 1815 French chemist Michael Eugene Chevreul realized the first link between diabetes and sugar metabolism. Among other organic substances, Chevreul studied sugar, which he isolated from the urine of a diabetic by showing that this sugar was identical to glucose (grape sugar), Chevreul took the first step toward the realization that diabetes occurs when the human body cannot metabolize sugar effectively. | |

We hope you are enjoying the lazy days of summer with fresh foods, vacations, picnics and outside activities.
This month, we have a guest writer, Dr. Erwin Bulan, who provides insight into body changes after having a baby. We also talk about nutrition - and simple things you can do from the inside out to make a huge impact on your health. And we address the common problem of hemorrhoids.
Our "Meet the Staff" section highlights Saleemah Williams, our friendly receptionist. And don't forget to read this month's medical "I didn't know that!"
As always, we will continue to provide topics that are current, informative and important to your good health.
Sincerely,
Robert J. Rubino, MD and Staff |
Body after Baby
by Dr. Bulan, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery |
In response to many queries from our patients on plastic surgery, we invited a highly respected plastic surgeon to give perspective on what is available, with insights into what cosmetic procedure may be right for each individual:
Has your body changed after giving birth? This is a common concern from postpartum women. In addition to proper diet and exercise, there are several options to improve your body shape. The infamous "baby pouch" A recent survey of postpartum women shows "despite the ability to lose some or all of their pregnancy weight, 88% of women could not get back their pre-baby stomach." In the postpartum period, a natural skin contraction process occurs to tighten back the abdominal skin. This process can be optimized using non-invasive office based skin tightening treatments, such as Accent Spa RF, which helps maximize skin contraction. These heat-based radiofrequency treatments, now used for post-partum patients, are FDA approved to improve cellulite and skin reduction. These treatments are performed right in the office with no down time as you recover from your pregnancy. Once the body has fully recovered from the pregnancy, it is not unusual for there to still be excess skin and an abdominal bulge. For a small lower abdominal "pouch", a Mini-Tummy Tuck can remove excess skin and tighten the lower abdominal muscles, all with a hidden incision in the lower abdomen. This is a simple procedure with great results. For more significant abdominal bulges, a full Tummy Tuck will tighten the abdominal muscles (which can stay separated after pregnancy), and remove and tighten the abdominal skin. Both surgeries successfully restore the abdominal muscles and remove excess skin for a tight and shapely abdomen. In addition, Liposuction can help optimize these body contouring procedures. Fat Deposits Your body might have extra fat deposits post baby - love handles, saddle bags, etc. These "localized fat deposits" can still remain, even if patients get back to their pre-baby weight. Smart Lipo, the latest liposuction procedure, uses a laser passed through tiny incisions to help remove the fat, tighten skin, and improve contour. This latest innovation significantly reduces bruising, quickens recovery, and can be done under local anesthesia or with minimal sedation. Change in Breast Shape Your breasts can change in shape and volume post-pregnancy, specifically after breastfeeding. Common procedures include a Mastopexy, or Breast Lift to raise the breasts or, to bring volume back to the breasts, Breast Augmentation can be performed safely and effectively with saline or silicone implants. Changes to your body after pregnancy can be challenging - but you do have options. Foremost, diet and exercise can help restore the body you loved pre-pregnancy - for additional improvements, plastic and reconstructive surgery offer safe and effective solutions. For more information on these Body After Baby procedures, or a complementary consultation with Dr. Bulan, contact Bulan Plastic Surgery, 75 Main Street., Suite 105, Millburn, NJ; 973-467-9744 (www.drerwinbulan.com) |

| Hemorrhoids - Are they Normal? |
Hemorrhoids are a swelling of the veins in the anal canal. It is a very common problem that is often painful but not serious. There are two types of hemorrhoids - internal and external.
Causes: hemorrhoids are caused when too much pressure is put on the veins in the pelvic and rectal area. They can appear if you strain to move stool and can occur with both diarrhea or constipation. Pregnant women can get hemorrhoids during the last 6 months of pregnancy due to the increase in pressure on the blood vessels in the pelvic area or straining to push the baby out during labor. Being overweight can also lead to hemorrhoids.
Symptoms: bleeding, itching or pain in the rectal area.
Treatments: Home treatment can cure hemorrhoids. Some suggestions include slowly adding fiber to your diet, drinking more water, using over-the-counter ointments to stop itching and burning (Tucks pads and Calmoseptine Ointment are effective). You also may use stool softeners. If your hemorrhoids are severe, you may need other options. A Colo-Rectal Surgeon can tie off the hemorrhoids with rubber bands or scar the tissue around the hemorrhoids. These treatments reduce the blood supply to the hemorrhoids so that they shrink or go away. Surgery to remove hemorrhoids may be done if other treatments don't work. Healthy habits can help you prevent hemorrhoids or keep them from getting worse. Eat foods that have lots of fiber, such as fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Also, drink plenty of water and get plenty of exercise.
If you are experiencing hemorrhoids , ask our doctors about treatment options. |
