Medical Fact
"I didn't know that!"
Cleopatra used cow dung as an early form of a diaphragm. In 1844 Charles Goodyear invented the rubber vulcanization process, applied in the 1880s by a German gynecologist C. Haase, for the first rubber contraceptive device with a spring molded into the rim. Hasse, writing under the pseudonym Mensinga, supplied the Mensinga diaphragm - the only brand available for many decades. Starting in 1860's, the physician Edward Bliss Foote designed and sold an early form of occlusive pessary under the name "womb veil" in the US. | |

We hope you had a wonderful Forth of July weekend and are staying cool through this heat wave!
This month, we address female Truth vs. Myth in an article called "My Girlfriend Says...", we introduce a new test for determining the sex of your baby and we complete our 3 part series on Menopause.
Our "Meet the Staff" section highlights Paul Francischetti, the eyes, ears and billing behind The Rubino Group. And don't forget to read this month's medical "I didn't know that!"
As always, we will continue to provide topics that are current, informative and important to your good health.
Sincerely,
Robert J. Rubino, MD and Staff |

Is it a Boy or Girl? | We are excited to announce a new test called Fetalxy - a Fetal Sex Determination Test that determines the sex of your baby early in your pregnancy.
The Rubino Group is the only practice in the NJ and NY Metro area currently offering this option to their patients. This new genetic test can determine your baby's sex from a simple blood test performed in the first trimester, as early as your first office visit.
This genetic testing is highly accurate and available only through your physician.
The test is not a substitute for an ultrasound and is not intended as a tool for medical diagnosis - therefore, it is not covered by insurance companies. The fee is nominal and the test is elective.
If you are interested in receiving this test, please talk to your doctor. For more information, visit Sequenom CMM. |
Post Menopause - Part III: the final chapter | We have discussed Perimenopause and Menopause. This month, we complete the series with Post Menopause - when most of the symptoms of menopause have passed.
How do you tell if you are in post menopause?
- 12 full months have passed since the last menstrual period
- The level of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) rises - this indicates your body is trying card to produce eggs that don't exist. Your doctor can measure these levels.
- Estrogen production shifts from the ovaries to the fat cells in a woman's body and ovaries shrink in size
- Hot flashes seem milder or less frequent
- Energy and emotional levels may seem to have stabilized
If a women has practiced good health and continues through post menopause, she will be better prepared physiologically and emotionally for the changes caused by menopause.
It is never too late to begin a good wellness regimen. A healthy woman passes through menopause with fewer problems than one who has not prepared herself with exercise and good nutrition.
Recommendations:
- Keep your diet nutritious, with calcium-rich foods
- Ensure you include weight-bearing exercises in your workouts
- Discuss hormone replacement or herbal aids with your doctor
- Get regular medical checkups
If you have any questions about this time in your life, please schedule an appointment with the office to discuss your options with your doctor. |
