Medical Fact
 "I didn't know that!"
The modern Red Cross was born out of a battlefield misery.  A swiss banker, Jean Henri Dunant, witnessed the tragic conditions of a battlefield in Solferino, in Northern Italy. He was horrified to see 9,000 soldiers without medical care & organized local villagers to care for the wounded. He captured his experience in a memoir "Un Souvenir de Solverino", leading to the International Red Cross in 1864. Dunant was the first Noble laureate, and donated his prize to charity.

Mother's Day Tribute from Dr. Rubino
After settling into bed recently on a rainy night, my wife, alerted me to the factsue rubino that she might have left her windows in her car open. While I pondered letting out a long sigh, something stopped me, and I just hopped up and ran out to check the car.

As I walked through the house, I passed each of my sleeping children. I never heard a long sigh from their mom during labor, or the 18 weeks of bed rest with our second. No mumbling that the days were endless or the demands of motherhood were too great.

Most men hope to find the apple of their eye and the one who will care for the gleams in the other eye. We pick a wife because we know they are the people we aspire to be, the perfect teacher for our kids. I know what stopped me from sighing that night...Gratitude. Thankful to find the one for me, thankful that she said "yes" to the most important of questions, and grateful for the person she is, teaching our kids everyday, the lessons of life.

To all the moms we have the privilige of serving,  Happy Mothers day.
With great respect,
Dr. Rubino
Understanding Human PapillomaVirus (HPV)
by Dr. Saitta
Human PapillomaVirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted virus in the United States.

HPV can be passed from person to person through skin-to-skin contact.
Most types of HPV are sexually transmitted and spread through sexual contact (including oral sex). Studies suggest that at least three out of every four people who are sexually active will get an HPV infection during their lifetime.
Certain types of HPV cause cancer of the cervix. Each year in the United States, cervical cancer is diagnosed in more than 11,000 women, and more than 3,000 women die from this cancer.

Types of HPV
There are two types of HPV, High Risk HPV and Low Risk HPV.

High Risk HPV causes cells on or around the cervix to become abnormal.  Early cervical cellular abnormalities are known as pre-cancer.   A Pap Smear is the best way to detect cell changes that may be an early sign of pre-cancer of the cervix.
Low Risk HPV is linked to genital warts - lesions that may affect the vulva, vagina or cervix in women or the penis and surrounding structures in men.  Warts often can be treated and usually are not linked with cancer. At least 50% of sexually active people will have genital HPV at some time in their lives.

Symptoms
Most people with HPV do not develop symptoms or health problems from it. In 90% of cases, the body's immune system clears HPV naturally within two years.  But there is no way to know which people who get HPV will go on to develop cancer or other health problems.

Prevention
There is a vaccine available to help prevent HPV infection.  It currently is recommended for girls and women between the ages of 9 and 26 years and is often covered by your insurance. It is also available to males. This vaccine is preventative and can greatly reduce the risk of cancer of the cervix and genital warts.

Call the office to discuss HPV with your doctor and schedule an appointment to get your vaccination. You can also visit the
Center for Disease Control to find out more.
Menopause: Part I of III
We received an overwhelming number of requests from  our survey to discuss Menopause in our newsletter. In response, we are running a three part series on Menopause over the next three newsletters: Perimenopause, Menopause and Post-Menopause.

This month, we will discuss Perimenopause, or "menopause transition" which begins several years (4 years, on average) before Menopause. It usually starts in your 40's but can start as early as your 30's.

Perimenopause is the transition period a woman goes through when her ovaries stop producing eggs, her body produces less estrogen and progesterone, and menstruation becomes less frequent, eventually stopping altogether (Menopause).

In some women, menstrual flow comes to a sudden halt. More commonly, it slowly stops over time. During this time, the menstrual periods generally become either more closely or more widely spaced.

Common symptoms of Perimenopause
  • Hot flashes
  • Breast tenderness
  • Worsening of premenstrual syndrome
  • Decreased libido (sex drive)
  • Fatigue
  • Irregular periods
  • Vaginal dryness; discomfort during sex
  • Urine leakage when coughing or sneezing
  • Urinary urgency (a pressing need to urinate more frequently)
  • Mood swings
  • Difficulty sleeping
Treatments
Some women experience relief from hot flashes by taking low-dose birth control pills, using the birth control skin patch, vaginal ring, and progesterone injections. But hormones are not right for every woman.

Other options that help include Black Cohosh and soy for hot flashes, local estrogen cream for vaginal dryness/painful intercourse, and Vitamin D and Calcium supplementation. Tai Chi can help for both anxiety reduction and better balance and reduce the risk for falling and fracture. To combat irritability and forgetfullness women can incorporate daily mental challenges such as Sodo crossword puzzles etc,

Other health-enhancing options can help improve your symptoms:
  • Exercise.
  • Stop smoking if you smoke.
  • Get more sleep and try going to sleep and waking up at the same time each day.
  • Decrease the amount of alcohol you drink.
  • Get to a healthy weight and stay there.
  • Take a multivitamin supplement and ingest enough calcium.
  • Drink at least eight glasses of water each day.
Talk to your doctor about your specific symptoms and goals of treatment to help determine the right plan for you.
Meet the Staff
As our launch of the new "Meet the Staff" section of our newsletter, we are profiling Gail Antonucci, a Medical Technician with The Rubino OB/GYN Group.
Gail

Gail started in the medical field working at a hospital doing clerical work for 10 years. She started in OB/GYN with Dr. John Comerci, MD over 22 years ago, until Dr. Rubino took over the practice in 1998. Gail enjoyed her job so much, and had such a great rapport with most of the patients, she decided to stay on with Dr. Rubino. Gail felt Dr. Rubino made so many improvements that her job became even more enjoyable.

Gail says she "looks at most of the patient's like family, I know their children, their spouses, and other family member's  and have grown so close to so many of the them who have remained with the practice over the years."  Gail also feels she has learned a lot working with Dr. Rubino and really loves to watch the practice grow and flourish with new ideas in modern medicine.

Gail is the grandmother of two beautiful granddaughters from her daughter Melissa (Jacqueline who is 22 months & Harlow who is 8 weeks old) and spends as much time with them as possible.  She also enjoys conversation at Starbuck's with her good friend Linda and her husband Jim, or shopping in the mall (one of her many passions).

Gail looks forward to working with Dr. Rubino and the staff until she is ready for retirement. Until then she continue to enjoy seeing all the friends she has made from patient's walking through the office doors.

Dr. Rubino adds he's "pretty sure he works for Gail rather than the other way around!"   ... and states "she is a pleasure to work with..."
