"I didn't know that!"
The Benzene Ring (a basic chemical structure of most drugs), was discovered in a dream of the inventor, who dreamed of 6 snakes chasing each other -biting each others' tails. When he woke up, he drew it, hence the Benzene Ring. |

| Celebrating Women! Women's History Month |
Growing out of a small-town school event in California, Women's History Month is a celebration of women's contributions to history, culture and society. The United States observes it annually throughout the month of March.
Following are achievements of some of the most ground-breaking women in medicine:
1775 - Mary Ludwig (aka "Molly Pitcher"), from Trenton, NJ, is recognized as a true Revolutionary war hero. Nursing the sick and wounded and fighting in the war herself, she received the nickname Molly Pitcher for delivering water to soldiers.
1849- Elizabeth Blackwell receives her M.D. degree from the Medical Institution of Geneva, N.Y., becoming the first woman in the U.S. with a medical degree
1864 - Rebecca Lee Crumpler becomes the first black woman to receive an M.D. degree. She graduated from the New England Female Medical College.
1866 - Lucy Hobbs becomes the first woman to graduate from dental school, the Ohio College of Dental Surgery
1873 - Ellen Swallow Richards, the first woman to be admitted to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, earns her B.S. degree. She becomes the first female professional chemist in the U.S.
1898 - Madame Marie Curie discovers radioactivity (used in x-rays). She is the world's most famous woman scientist, winning 2 Nobel Prizes
We celebrate women this March, and every day, for their remarkable life achievements! |

Studies have shown that if you consume too much caffeine, it can cause pain in your breasts.
If your breasts hurt consistently every month for a week or so, it could be the caffeine.
Try a simple test. Monitor your breast pain while consuming caffeine and rank it on a scale of 1-10. Then, go on a caffeine "holiday" for that same week of the following month. During the test week of no caffeine, rank your pain levels again, seeing if you notice a difference.
If you notice a difference, it is likely you found the culprit. You then have a decision to make - less pain or more coffee. |
| Healthy Teeth = Healthy Pregnancy |
|
There is an interesting correlation between pre-term labor and dental disease.
Recent studies have revealed that pregnant women with periodontal disease (infection and inflammation around the teeth and gums) increases the risk for pre-term delivery.
The studies seem to show that good oral health PRIOR to pregnancy is the best way to minimize the risk of pre-term birth that active periodontal disease may promote. A recent study called the PIPS (Periodontal Infections and Prematurity Study) trial, evaluated if treatment of the condition during pregnancy removes the risk. It was concluded that treatment during pregnancy did not reduce the risk of pre-term birth, further confirming the importance of treatment prior to pregnancy.
A visit to your dentist prior to conceiving offers the best opportunity to diagnose and treat the condition, so it is not a factor in your pregnancy. |
