Happy New Year! We hope you had a wonderful holiday and are keeping warm during this cold winter season.
This month, we provide a food safety guide for pregnant women, discuss birth control and fertility, offer solutions for incontinence and introduce a referral program for our patients.
As always, we will continue to provide topics that are current, informative and important to your good health.
Sincerely,
Robert J. Rubino, MD and Staff |
| Food Safety During Pregnancy |
It is important to monitor your intake of certain foods when you are pregnant to ensure the safety of you and your baby. Pregnant women have a weakened immune system, therefore have more difficulty fighting off harmful food-borne microorganisms. In addition, your baby's immune system is not yet fully developed.
Below is a guideline for specific food groups:
Fish
In general, pregnant women should avoid shark, tilefish, mackeral and swordfish. Consuming 12 oz per week of other select cooked fish is considered safe. Cooked seafood is preferable since raw fish are more likely to be cantaminted by food handlers. A can of tuna per week (6 0z, in water) is also ok, although albacore tuna has been noted to have higher mercury levels than light tuna.
The mercury risk is remote when following these guidelines and the proven benefit of the DHA in fish in the support of b rain development is beneficial. Therefore, pregnant women who like fish should not eliminate it from their diet. Caffeine
Caffeine should be avoided in the first trimester of pregnancy. High doses (4 cups per day or more) has been linked to an increase in first trimester miscarriage. The risk beyond the first trimester seems to resolve. Moderation seems to be a reasonable course when it comes to caffeine.
Herbs
Although some herbal supplements merit attention, some herbs have been associated with miscarriage or defects during pregnancy. Specifically, Flax Seed Oil has a possible link to pre-term labor, Devils Claw can stimulate contractions and Papain has been linked to miscarriages. Click here for a comprehensive list of dangerous herbs from iVillage.
And, of course, pregnant women should avoid alchohol.

| Birth Control and Fertility |
Have you wondered if your current form of birth control causes fertility problems once you decide to conceive?
This is a common question asked of OB/GYNs when they prescribe patients non-permanent contraception, or birth control.
The most commonly prescribed method of birth control is oral contraceptives - also known as "the pill". A woman usually resumes fertility the first month off the pill, although few may have a short delay before ovulating, but there is no long term influence on fertility. A common misconception is that a woman must wait three months to 'get the pill out of your system'. This is not true.
The injectable birth control, Depot Provera (progesterone only) also does not influence long term fertility, although return to ovulation may be delayed from 1-6 months after last injection.
In addition, the intrauterine devices (IUDs) currently available do not alter long term fertility rates after removed.
In summary, most contraceptives vary in the time it takes to return to normal ovulation, but do not influence fertility and are safe to use prior to trying to conceive. |
Incontinence - Easy Solutions |
|
For many women, a little leak of urine while playing tennis, or laughing, is just a minor nusiance. For some, just a simple act triggers an urge to race to the bathroom. These daily occurances are often just accepted and women work around them.
The good news is that many new therapies now exist to control incontinence. A simple test called URODYNAMICS, performed in our office, can isolate the problem. Dr Audrey Romero, our on-staff Urogynecologist, can help correct the problem so you can go back to a normal way of life, before your bladder complicated it. Make an appointment today with Dr. Romero to discuss your options. |
