| Mammogram Debate |
There is much confusion and controversy surrounding the new mammogram guidelines from the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force.
The updated information suggests that routine mammograms for women in their 40s are not necessary and self-exams are not reliable.
The physicians at the Rubino OBGYN Group have reviewed the newly-released recommendations from the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) and strongly advise their patients to continue to get mammograms every year, beginning at age 40 (35 if there is a significant family history of breast cancer).
The task force is composed of 16 health care experts, none of whom are oncologists. The American Cancer Society (ACS), the American College of Radiology (ACR), the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), the American Medical Association (AMA), US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), and the Society of Breast Imaging (SBI) are among the highly respected medical organizations that are urging women and their physicians to continue to adhere to existing guidelines about mammography and breast self-examination. Since 1990, when insurance companies began covering routine screening mammography, the mortality rate from breast cancer has decreased by 30%.
From Dr. Rubino's perspective, the recommendations are influenced by non-medical issues and the suggestion that the self breast exam should not be performed or is not useful, is a disservice to patients. Self exams save lives.
If you have any concerns regarding mammogram screening, please discuss it with one of the doctors on our staff. |
| Pap smears: New Recommendations |
The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) just issued new Pap smear guidelines. The latest ACOG recommendations reflect the progress of Pap smear tests and successful detection. Pap smear screening has helped prevent almost all abnormal Pap smears from becoming cervical cancer.
Prior research revealed it was necessary for Pap smear to be performed annually on all women. The ACOG has concluded the frequency of Pap smears can be reduced in certain patients and situations and still protect women.
The new recommendations:
- Women should have their first screening Pap smear at age 21
- Women in their 20's should have a Pap smear every two years
- Women who have had a hysterectomy should no longer have Pap smears if the hysterectomy was for non-cancerous reasons and they don't have a history of severely abnormal Pap smears. If a hysterectomy was performed, but the cervix is still intact, routine Pap smears are recommended
The Rubino Group disagrees with the first two recommendations.
The Rubino Group Recommendations:
- We advise to continue with annual surveillance of women once they become sexually active
- The first pap smear should be conducted by age 18 or when a woman becomes sexually active
- For women who have had a hysterectomy, Pap smear surveillance can be reduced in certain patients and they will still be protected.
ACOG continues to strongly advise annual health evaluations by their doctors, which The Rubino Group supports.

Relay Health: New Partnership |
The Rubino Group is pleased to announce a new partnership with Relay Health.
In an effort to bettter serve our patients, we contracted with Relay Health, a secure, online health information portal. It will allow us to offer better communication with our patients and their physicians.
Initially, patients that have LABCORP labs, can sign up to get certain results e-mailed to them under a secure network. We will provide an improved, user friendly Personal Health Record that will integrate lab data and doctor visits. It will also allow all of a patients' doctors accessiblity to their files, if they choose. Other key services will be rolled out in the future.
This new system will be implemented within the next couple of weeks and will be accessible on our website. |
