The IUD - What is it and How Does it Work?
By Jacqueline Saitta, M.D.

The intrauterine device (IUD) is a type of birth control. It is a small,
plastic device that is inserted by a physician and left inside the uterus to prevent pregnancy.

There are several types of IUDs,  yet there are only two currently available in the United States: the hormonal IUD, commonly known as the MIRENA, which can be left in the uterus up to 5 years and the copper IUD, or PARAGARD, which can be left in the uterus up to 10 years.

How They Work
Both IUDs have a similar T-shaped appearance but they work in different ways. The hormonal IUD releases a small amount of the hormone progestin into the uterus. This thickens the cervical mucus, which decreases the chance that the sperm will enter the cervix. The copper IUD prevents the egg from being fertilized. The copper also prevents sperm from going through the uterus and into the fallopian tubes, reducing the sperm's ability to fertilize an egg. Both function as a physcial barrier.

Benefits of the IUD
The IUD is one of the most effective forms of birth control available. It is easy to use, you don't have to remember to take a pill every day and it doesn't have the common side effects that pills do such as headaches, bloating, breast tenderness and nausea.  It also will not interfere with your daily life; in fact, most people do not ever feel it.

Side Effects
Some women stop use of the IUD due to bleeding, cramping or infection.

For permanent birth control, Essure® is an available option. It is a 10 minute, in-office procedure that is administered much in the same way as an IUD and is performed in all 3 office locations.

A physician must place and remove an IUD.  If you think an IUD is right for you, call for an appointment today and you can be one step closer to worry free contraception.
