Hysterectomies and Cardiovascular Risk
A new study from the Mayo Clinic reports a 44 percent lifetime increase in cardiovascular risk for women under 45,  that have Prophylactic Ophorectomy (ovaries removed) at the time of a hysterectomy. The study looked at women who elected to have non-diseased ovaries removed, while undergoing hysterectomy, to prevent the future risk for Ovarian Cancer.

Women who had their ovaries removed, but took hormone replacement until at least age 45, had a 35 percent decrease in cardiovascular risk.  Patients under 45,  who did not take estrogen replacement after Oophorectomy, had a higher chance for cardiovascular risk, about 84 percent.

The authors of the article note that a minority of women who are at high risk for ovarian cancer are still wise to opt for removal, but individualized decision making for each patient is the most prudent option.
Safe Alternative to Hysterectomy
In light of the Mayo Clinic study above, there is an new alternative to Hysterectomy proven to be successful in curing heavy and painful menstrual cycles without the need or risk of surgery.  In addition, the added benefit of not increasing your cardiovascular risk with Oophorectomy, as seen with hysterectomies.

A painless, non-invasive procedure called Her OptionŽ Cryoablation is the only ablation procedure approved by the FDA for in-office use.  Using the natural anesthetic properties of ice, Cryoablation is a safe, simple 15- minute, in-office procedure that helps stop heavy or painful menstrual bleeding without surgery, general anesthesia or hormones.  This new procedure has reduced the need for hysterectomies by 90%.

Ideal candidates are between the ages of 25 and 55, with heavy and painful periods and/or fibroids and have completed childbirth. Patients can resume normal activity the same day and the procedure is covered by most insurance plans.

Dr. Rubino has been leading this Cryo initiative, inventing the Clock Technique, which uses 3-D ultrasound technology for the most accurate intra-operative, direct visualization to increase safety of the procedure.  Dr. Rubino published a paper on this innovation and presented it at the April 2009 National Scientific Meeting of the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM) in New York.

For more information on Her Option Cryoablation, click here. To determine if you are a candidate for Cryoablation, please schedule a consultation with Dr. Rubino in any of the 3 offices.
