Welcome to the March issue of our LifeCycles Newsletter!
This month we address topics that relate to "getting a fresh start" in the new Spring season. Topics include pregnancy & nutrition, bariatric surgery and curing femine discomfort.
Periodically, we will invite guest writers to address topics that many of our patients inquire about. In this issue, we welcome Dr. Bilof as our first expert, discussing Bariatric Surgery.
As always, we will continue to provide topics that are current, informative and important to your good health.

| Bariatric Surgery: Is it right for you? |
Also known as "weight loss surgery," Bariatric Surgery is performed as a treatment for obesity to significantly reduce a patient's body weight. There are two main types of abdominal surgery, both performed laparoscopically (thru very small incisions): Gastric Bypass: Reduces the amount of food that can be eaten and decreases the absorption of calories. This procedure is permanent. The average patient can expect to lose between 70-90 percent of their excess weight. Gastric Banding: Reduces the amount of food that can be eaten but does not decrease the absorption of calories. This procedure is reversible. The average patient can expect to lose between 40-60 percent of their excess weight.Choosing which procedure is best for you depends upon your medical history, weight loss goals, lifestyle, expectations and doctor recommendation. This surgery is not a "quick fix". It represents a commitment to reclaiming your health. Today, more Americans are morbidly obese - 100+ pounds above normal body weight. Obesity can directly relate to diseases like Type II Diabetes, High Blood Pressure, Sleep Apnea and Heart Disease. The good news is this surgery can reverse, and in many cases, cure many of these conditions. For Type II Diabeties, there is an 80 percent chance that a gastric bypass will cure the diabetes. If your Body Mass Index (or BMI - a height to weight ratio) is greater than or equal to 40, then you are a candidate for weight loss surgery. If your BMI is between 35 and 39.9 you may be a candidate for surgery if you have serious medical problems related to obesity such as the conditions above including Type II Diabetes, Hypertension (high blood pressure), or Sleep Apnea. For more information, contact Dr. Michael Bilof, a Center of Excellence Surgeon by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. He has performed more than 1,000 successful Gastric Bypass and Banding surgeries.

| What is Vulvodynia? |
Many women express a concern with pain they experience when inserting tampons or having intercourse.
This condition is more common that you think and might be a case of Vulvodynia. Vulvodynia is a discomfort or pain of the vaginal opening, or lower vagina when touch or pressure is applied. Symptoms include burning sensations, stinging, irritation or rawness that is not related to an infection. These symptoms can occur with some or all of the following: sexual intercourse, tampon insertion, bicycle riding, or wearing tight pants.
It is poorly understood why the condition occurs. Many women suffer with the symptoms in silence and do not report it to their physician.
Vulvodynia, as with most chronic pain conditions, can have a profound impact on a woman's quality of life. It typically affects the ability to engage in sexual activity and may interfere with daily functioning, e.g., sitting at a desk, engaging in physical exercise, and participating in social activities.
The good news is that effective treatments exist and can restore patients to a pain free state. If you are experiencing these symptoms, alert your Gynecologist. Help can be just a visit away. |
