Quotes of the Week |

Dear Friends,
Normally, I don't brag about winning. But I'm whipped up in the Olympic competitive spirit. So here goes: In Asheville last week, our riders earned a grand total of 30 Championship and Reserve Championship titles -- and more ribbons than we could count! You go Team CLS! You rocked!!
So the truth comes out. I love to win. I'm a competitive beast. Cutthroat. Dogged. Vicious. That's how fellow reporters who've worked in newsrooms with me have described me -- to my face!
But I'm older now. And a mother. I've matured beyond my cutthroat days. Now I truly do appreciate the losses as much as the wins. I believe it with all my heart when I say "It's not about the win. It's about the ride."
But man, oh man, do I love to win. The fact is, we all want to win and like to win. It's easy to crow about our wins -- or to sit back coyly letting other people brag on us while we pretend to be humble.
It's much harder to speak when you lose. It took Top Ranking US Gymnast Jordyn Wieber a few minutes to compose herself after losing a coveted position during Sunday night's Olympic Games. Every time interviewers tried, the cameras showed a crying Jordyn. To this amazing young woman's credit, she pulled herself together. When she finally spoke, she was composed. She said all the right things, even though her eyes were dead.
That's her life lesson. Sometimes, in the middle of a predictably good life, the horrible or the unexpected happens. What matters is how you pull yourself together and face the badness, and the world. In those low times, the words that matter most are the ones you tell yourself.

Chris Hawley and Kirsten Wright host a group of visitors from A Child's World in High Point.
| For the rare few year-in, year-out, tried and true Champions of this world, the following can be said: The harder you fall, the higher you bounce . . . if you dare never to quit.
That's why Cash Lovell Stables has been around for Four Generations. And if this ol' competitor has anything to do with it, we're going for Five and beyond.
We'll see you soon, at the barn!
