a couple of days left!!!

Message from Parker
Dear Friends,
It all started innocently enough with five girls playing horse show out back. When the screams rang out, I thought someone had died. Little did I know the murder was still to come.

Background. A possum took up residency a few days ago in the barn. Any farm has varmints. But possums can't be tolerated because they can carry diseases that are deadly to horses. I ran upon the beaky-snouted, snake-tailed varmint one night at the barn when I was working late. Thank God a wall separated me from him. I was able to snap this photo from the window inside my office. As any tough, self-respecting barn girl would, I hid inside. He finally sauntered into the black of night.

The next evening, we ran a stake out to catch him.
He was a no show. The following night, I concocted a trap of poisoned marshmallows. Not even a bite.

I was contemplating my next move when I heard the screams. This little rodent, it seems, couldn't fight the lure of a good horse show. He peeped his head out of his hiding spot to watch my girls in action. And they spotted him! Thank Heavens barn Dad Nick Nickerson was there to help. I'll spare you the details of our possum's demise. That's largely because I missed it. I was standing on a chair a good 20 feet away with my eyes closed and my fingers stuck in my ears. Mr. Nick, our hero, delivered his ugliness to the afterlife.

Just another day at the funny farm. Yes. I gave up a respectable job, with health insurance and retirement benefits, for this.
Nick and Ms. Sondra with their prey bagged and ready for burial.

Parker

P.S. The rest of the story: We bagged that possum and stuck him in a trash can -- on ice!  Our plan was to take him and have him tested for rabies. That's until a barn mom informed us that possums can't normally carry rabies because of the coldness of their blood. A little research proved her right.  Who knew?!? A barn mom, of course.

P.P.S. Ms. Ellen, the genius behind our newsletters, isn't a farm girl. She voted to remove our possum adventure from this week's newsletter. Sorry Ellen!

CLS Staff News
Steve and Julia Joyce Extend Their Stay at CLS!
Ms. Julia and Cashlyn ce
lebrate after her ride at the recent Dallas NC show!

As many in our barn family know, the highly-regarded training team of Steve and Julia Joyce came out of retirement to train the CLS Show Horses in recent months. And what an awesome job they did! We are pleased to report that we've convinced them to postpone their retirement again!

With the arrival of Max Ciampoli, the
Mr. Steve and Stella enjoying the Dallas sunshine
new trainer at CLS, Steve and Julia could have high-tailed it back to the easy life. But they've fallen in love with our babies. Imagine that!

In addition to assisting with training, they also will teach lessons.
Steve commanded the show rider group on Saturday, and it was
awesome! He will teach this class when his schedule allows. This class is for show horse owners/riders only.

But  Ms. Julia's famous private lessons, which she's teaching on a limited basis, are open to anyone. If you want to learn from one of the true greats of this sport, she's here!

And I'm so tickled I could just bust!

When I think of how many years of experience this CLS Team brings to our riders, when I think of how many World and National Champion horses and riders they've made collectively, I'm stunned at our power. Cash Lovell. Max Ciampoli. Steve Joyce. Julia Joyce. Tina Glosemeyer. Jeanine Lovell. Jamie Jankowicz.

Man this is going to be fun!

Introducing Katie Moeller!

One of the top young adult riders in the country, Katie comes to CLS from Missouri. Katie grew up riding with Max and Tina at Jimmy Hite Stables, where Max trained for 30 years before coming to CLS.

Throughout her years showing, Katie has been a Reserve World Champion in both the 3-gaited and equitation divisions, as well as a National equitation champion. She also was asked to compete in South Africa as part of the United States Invitational Saddleseat Team in 2010. Katie is volunteering as a CLS intern this summer. While she's here, she will show her horse, Virtual Volcano, in Adult Equitation and Country Pleasure.

Katie is a wonderful role model for our youngsters and an awesome instructor. While she's at CLS, she will be available to teach lessons -- and she's filling up quickly. One ride with this enthusuastic, positive and oh-so talented young lady, and you'll see why!  Welcome Katie!
