Dear Friends,
I discovered this poem many years ago after I met and fell in love with Cash.
What Is A Horse Trainer? A stranger in the modern world struggling for survival in the age of computers. All he has to sell is his time and his talent. Other horsemen tell him better times are coming. His mother tells him he should have done something else.
A horse trainer comes in many different sizes, and from many different backgrounds. He is a college graduate with manure on his boots and sawdust in his hair. He is a country boy in a new Cadillac. He is an athlete, a family man, a showman. The kids idolize him. The girls love him. His wife tolerates him.
His days are long, and his pay short. He lives a life of sleepless nights, constant travel and credit cards. His bank account hangs on victory and defeat. His best friends often are his toughest competition. The only time he is made to feel important is when he judges a horse show. And that is shortly lived.
A horse trainer is known for his violent temper and his soft heart. He will battle a horse with vengeance, and he will handle a colt with kindness. Between these extremes of his nature, a horse trainer is comforted by the knowledge that he is doing what he really wants to do.
Nothing can replace the feeling he gets when he puts his foot into the stirrup and swings into the saddle on a good horse. He may be poor by some standards. But he is, at that moment, rich beyond compare.
One morning this week, I walked into the barn to find Steve Joyce on the back of CH Audrey Hepburn. Per her training schedule, this grand mare should have been lined or driven that day, but not ridden. "What's up?" I asked Steve. He smiled, patted this extraordinary mare, and coyly said, "I'm ridin' Audrey. It's my birthday present to myself."
Horse trainers. After Cash became ill, Steve and his wife, Julia, came out of retirement to help. They agreed to train the CLS Show Horses until Max Ciampoli could move from Missouri to take over the job long term. I will forever be indebted to Steve and Julia for sharing their kindness, time and genius with our barn family -- of which they've become a part forever.
Max, and his longtime assistant Tina, arrived late Thursday night. A new era at CLS is here. I'm scared, sad, overwhelmed and excited all at the same time. It is my great honor to share our amazing babies and horses with Max, whose horsemanship Cash and I have admired for many, many years.
Cash has lost much of his ability to speak clearly and concisely. Funny though, when I asked Cash how he felt about Max's arrival, he spoke clear and fast: "He's a good horse trainer."
I smiled. Takes one to know one, Cash. Takes one to know one.

 Sondra Graduates from Salem College
On Saturday, May 19, Ms. Sondra was graduated from Salem College with honors. Sondra is the office manager at CLS. During much of her college life, she served as Cash's assistant trainer. She's also a beloved riding instructor at CLS.
Sondra worked the equivalent of a full time job, and a second nearly full-time job teaching riding lessons, while attending Salem full time to earn her business degree. What a hard-working role model for our youngsters!
Congratulations, Sondra!

Critter City
Critter lovers will be delighted to know that CLS now has even more animals to spoil!
With the arrival of Max and Tina, we have inherited a goat named "Rain," three miniature horses - "Thunder, Breezy and Stormy," -- two more bunnies -- "Isis" and "Sunshine", and two cats -- "Friday" and "Duster."
It's called a back-up plan. If we can't make it in the horse business, we'll start a petting zoo!
Please enjoy meeting the new CLS critters!

Thank You for Huge Amount of Food for the Second Harvest Food Bank
We want to thank all of our riders, barn families and friends who brought canned and dry goods for our food drive in association with the Spring Fun Show! We are so proud of the enormous amount of food that was brought in.
The organization that we gave the food to -- the Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest NC -- has been helping feed people in our community for over 30 years. Their focus is on providing nutritious food for families with children and seniors living on fixed incomes. Over the summer, the Food Bank will be working to make sure local school children have enough to eat. If you're interested in continuing to help the Food Bank -- they welcome volunteers.
