Horses Raise Great Kids!

Quotes of the Week

"It's so important to know that you can choose to feel good. Most people don't think they have that choice."
- Neil Simon

"It's what you've learned after you know it all that counts."
- John Wooden

"Making your mark on the world is hard. If it were easy, everybody would do it. But it's not. It takes patience, it takes commitment, and it comes with plenty of failure along the way.  The real test is not whether you avoid this failure, because you won't. It's whether you let it harden or shame you into inaction, or whether you learn from it -- whether you choose to persevere."
~ President Barack Obama

Best Wishes Team CLS at the Raleigh Spring Premier Horse Show!

Sixteen year old Sarah Martin had a very fun surprise at CLS from her family on her birthday last week. Sarah has grown up at CLS after starting to ride at 4!  She's a fantastic student, and we're mighty proud of her. Happy birthday, Sarah! See below for other March birthdays.
Message from Parker

Dear friends,

When I think of how many neat people horses have brought into my life from across the human spectrum, it stuns me. Whether you jet set or drive a jalopy -- whether you're Harvard or hillbilly (or a little of both) -- if you're a horse lover, you'll find kinship and comfort in a barn. You'll find people who are like you on the inside, even if your outsides look very different.

This week, our motley barn family crew heads to the first horse show of 2012. We'll load the trucks and vans and motorhome -- glorified gypsies on parade. We'll escape to Raleigh to join our horse friends. And the outside world will magically disappear.

Below left: Jozy's Daddy, John Unal, adds a little pink spice to CLS's new green and purple office. And below right: Jesse James made an early Monday morning visit to Forsyth Country Day School. The children were of little interest to Jesse. The fresh clover outside of the middle school, however, pleased him greatly!

Longtime CLS Rider   Dr. Catie Hawley Heads to Harvard!

I have dreamed of writing these words for so many years! And in my bones, I knew this day would come. Let me preface by stating as fact that horse girls are determined. Don't stand between them and anything they want in this life.

And at CLS, we've been privileged to share in the lives of some pretty amazing horse girls. But Catie tops an illustrious list. Smarts. Beauty. Charm. Grace. It appears that God truly smiled on Catie. But what most folks don't know is that Catie has worked harder than any other human being I've ever know. As a child, she would leave a horse show to go back to her hotel room to study. Everything Catie did, she gave it her all -- even to the point of bloodying her knees nearly to the bone during lunge lessons. Winning was always fun for Catie. But preparing to win -- that was always her specialty.

Medical school at Vanderbilt has been no different. Month after month after grueling month, little Catie holed up and studied. I saw her at one point - pasty pale skin, meatless bones, eyes dead from exhaustion -- and I had never seen such a pitiful looking creature. I also knew better than to fuss. Catie had her mind set on doing her residency in radiology at Harvard. And only death would have stopped her.

Catie was accepted into Harvard's program this week, as her CLS barn family watched online during Vanderbilt's special ceremony. Yes, I cried. Like a baby.

My little Catie returns home this week. Over the Easter weekend, she will marry Dr. John Phillips, who also is doing his radiology residence at Harvard.

Look for Catie around the barn while she's home. And introduce your children to her. There isn't a finer role model in the world.

Faith Nickerson Is Surprised With A Saddle!

Hard work pays off. That's a message we try to reiterate at every turn. And little Faith Nickerson learned that it's true!

Her parents, Nick and Jodi, surprised Faith with a saddle of her very own Friday night at CLS. They had challenged Faith to earn all As and super marks for conduct. And Faith did just that!

Faith rides with Ms. Jeanine. In the saddle, her most recent accomplishments include cantering the entire arena -- several times!

Congratulations Faith! She's pictured here with Avery Rose McCutchen. Faith will now be riding in the saddle that Avery has outgrown. You know what that means: Avery's in the market for a saddle!

CLS's VP of Technology Wins National Communications Award
CLS writer Ellen Bassett has won the coveted Constant Contact "All Star" Award.

Many of Ellen's clients, including CLS, use Constant Contact for email, event planning and data base management communications. Ellen was recognized because her newsletters have such a high "open" rate. In the electronics marketing world, this is huge!

Ellen is the brains behind Bassett Creative Services. And she's the mastermind behind the CLS newsletters.

Congratulations Ellen! We couldn't be more proud!

New Video!
Avery Riding Dribbles with a Head Cam
Cool movie with Avery Riding Dribbles with a Head Cam Produced by her great dad
Avery and Quinn's Cool Video!  Moms and Dads You Can See What It's Like to Be On A 1,000 Pound Horse Flying Around the Ring!
Special thanks to Academy Team Member Avery McC. and her dad Dr. Quinn for producing this awesome video. Dr. Quinn, an avid rock climber, had received the "head cam" as a gift for filming rock climbs -- but he and daughter Avery put it to great use on top of Dribbles.

For some of us who are not riders, this makes you appreciate what it's like to be riding!  Click on the video to watch. And thanks so much Avery and Quinn!

Former CLS Rider Sarah Madden Will Go on A 30-Hour Famine To Support Kids Around The World Who are Starving
Sarah Madden, a CLS former rider, is taking on a big task:  Trying to increase awareness of starving children around the world. She and friends from her youth group are participating in the "30-hour Famine" as part of a group called Team World Vision.

On Sarah's web page for the project she writes, "In the time leading up to and during our 30 hours of fasting, I am going to get a crash course in global hunger and come face to face with the realities of poverty and injustice. My youth group will make a global impact by learning about world hunger and raising money for hungry children around the world through World Vision; a local impact through service projects and raising awareness during our 30 hours; and an individual impact when I will get a small taste of what it is like for hungry kids around the world."

Please consider supporting Sarah by clicking here:

Spotlight on a Great Kid!

Don't Mess With This Young Man!

Seems the little men in the computer parts store weren't too impressed with young Chris Hawley -- until they bothered to talk to him.

Chris, who first came to CLS when he was 2 weeks old, is taking a class at Forsyth County Day School in which he and classmates are learning about the theory of building a computer. Theory phooey. Our little Chris wanted to build a computer -- not ponder it. And that is precisely what he did.

A very smart CLS Show Horse Rider, Chris researched and devised a plan on how to make a computer. His parts list in hand and money from his savings to spend, Chris began assembling the hardware -- much to the amazement of the salesmen.
"One salesman was trying to sell Chris some part, and Chris just ignored him and reached over the guy's head and said, 'This is what I need.' The guy looked shocked," said Ray Hawley, Chris's dad.

What happened next amazed everyone. From what you see below on the left, Chris built what you see on the right -- all by himself. And it works. And it's really really fast!. Teachers and students alike at FCDS were blown away. May I suggest a visit to the computer parts store for our next demo? Watch out Bill Gates. There's a new generation out here!

Barn Helpers of the Week

Our Barn Helper of the Week is . . . Carver Semans

I looked up one day and Carver was running my barn. Literally. The school horses were organized and groomed. The saddles were cleaned and on the right horses. Water troughs were full. The floor was swept. And on top of it all, my daughter's homework was done. Her tutor: Carver Semans.

"We just learned remainders, Ms. Parker," Carver announced. "She needs a little more practice, but we're getting there."

Well alrighty!

Carver has been riding at CLS since she was three years old. When I look at this graceful, smart, confident, hard working, gorgeous young woman, it's hard to believe how grown up and responsible she is. I have one consolation: Those precious cheeks are still round and rosy.

We love you Carver. Thank you for being our Helper of the Week EVERY week!

Rider Book Recommendation
Lydia T. Recommends "The Royal Diaries -- Elizabeth I"
Lydia T. is a third grader at Forsyth Country Day School who loves to read.

We caught her reading in the middle of a big mess in our office!  She recommends Elizabeth I, which is part of the Royal Diaries series because, "They are full of historical people and interesting events."  If any other riders have a book recommendation, please let us know!
