& Kentucky Derby Party

Saturday, May 5

Message from Parker

Dear CLS Family and Friends,

Tonight, Cooper and I dropped Cashlyn at a birthday party. And instead of dashing back to work, we went shopping.  Actually, I shopped while he devoured Chic-Fil-A and then napped in the backseat of my beloved old CRV.

I was cruising SteinMart, loading my arm with wild, colorful clothes to try, when I wondered why I wasn't having fun. I've always loved to shop. Granted, it's been years since I had a "real" job and shopped for - and adored - fancy clothes. And shoes, honey, you have no idea.

But tonight, shopping just didn't feel right. Granted, I'm way out of practice. But more than that, it just felt absurd. Racks upon racks upon racks of clothes and more clothes, on top of shoes and scarves and baubles of every description. We don't just live in a land of plenty. We live in a land of obscene amounts of plenty.  I dumped my armful of garments on a chair and walked out the door empty handed. Cooper was waiting. He cuddled in my lap, one floppy ear layed over the bottom of the steering wheel. Precious. We picked up a smiling Cashlyn and all was right again with the world.

Clearly, I'm getting old. My life is resembling a bad country song -- trusty ol' dogs,  worn out blue jeans and a rusty old car. Truth be told, I always have enjoyed country music.

Thanks everyone and we'll see you at the barn.

Pictures to the right:  Cooper gets used to the CLS way with a big hug from Jeanne (top) while poor Buddy has to wait (2). Cashlyn goes through a rite of passage with new braces (3) - ouch!  and Carver is looking great trying on new show duds. (4) Thank you Becker Brothers for getting our riders ready for Raleigh!

Community Service

Help Ronald McDonald House by Buying a Cute $10 T-Shirt!

For the third year, our Little Bits Club will support the Ronald McDonald house by participating in their "Sport A Shirt, Share a Night" program!

Purchase a $10 t-shirt and share the cost of a night at the Ronald McDonald House of Winston-Salem. This house is a "home away from home" that provides cheerful bedrooms, a fully stocked kitchen, play areas and and rest for families of children receiving medical care in our community's hospitals.

You can buy your t-shirt now through Wednesday, March 21st. Please visit us in the CLS office to place your order. We will contact you when the shirts are ready for pickup. We've already ordered Jesse's XXX Large shirt. Bet he's the only pony in town who shows his Ronald McDonald House pride by sporting a t-shirt!
Thanks!

We need footballs, soccer balls, basketballs, plain old dodge balls, too . . .

Please bring in your used kickballs, soccer balls, basketballs and footballs and place them in our special Play for Peace basket in the barn office. This is our first year to be involved with this exciting project. Through giving out balls to children in need across the world, this unique organization is promoting peace, good will and education.

Bring your equipment to the CLS office as soon as possible. We will do the rest! For more information on "Play for Peace",  Click here.

Run with Leo!  Join CLS Families at the St. Leo's 5K Fun Run on St. Patrick's Day!

If you are interested in learning more about the CLS Mission Trip to Ghana to visit and work at the orphanage the barn has adopted, please join us! We will meet Sat. March 17 at 1 pm at the barn.
The trip is tentatively scheduled for the week of Thanksgiving 2012.

Dr. Medge Owen, a regular traveler to
Ghana who will lead our trip, will be at the meeting to discuss our plans and answer questions. This is the barn's first overseas mission trip. Our goal: To change the lives of those children we meet -- and those children we take with us.

Please email Ms. Parker if you plan to attend this special meeting.

We're honored to be considered a leader in riding academies nationally. And we're doubly-honored that you've chosen to share the wonderful world of showing horses with us.

Barn Helpers of the Week

Our Barn Helper of the Week is . . . Miss Abby Dwiggins

As barn helpers go, Abby is fairly new. But what she lacks in experience, she more than makes up for in attitude. Barn days never get too long for this 12-year-old honor student at Meadowlark Middle School.

Grooming horses, scooping poop, sweeping the lounge, turning out horses, cleaning tack, saddling, hot walking -- it doesn't matter what is asked of Abby, she is eager and excited to get the job done. And she's a great negotiator -- "Just a few more minutes Mom, please. I have a job to do." And she will sweep the hallway -- again. Abby set the record recently for sweeping the hallway more than 15 times!

Abby has been riding for a year and a half. She is a student of Ms. Jeanine's. Her favorite school horse is Moment. She has two big horse-related goals. One is to show a horse. The second is to become a veterinarian. Oh those girls in love with horses . . .
