Quotes of the Week |
"I've missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I've lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I've been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I've failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed." -Michael Jordan "You gain strength, courage and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face . . .You must do the thing you think you cannot do." - Eleanor Roosevelt "There is nothing noble in being superior to your fellow man; true nobility is being superior to your former self." - Ernest Hemingway |

Dear CLS Friends,
A glimpse into our crazy world . . .
At 4:00 am Saturday morning, we load the show horses and pull our CLS caravan out heading for Lexington KY. At 6:00 am, the dually truck - that would be the truck that we JUST sent the final payment in on -- breaks down. Four hours, $1,200 in repair estimates and a borrowed truck later, we are on our way again. At 2:50 pm, with temperatures hovering the 93 mark, we pull into The Red Mile track. Our real day's work begins -- bedding stalls, filling water buckets, unloading horses, hauling a truck load of supplies into our barn, setting up tack stalls and hanging stall curtains.
At 4:30 pm, we hear blood-curtling shrieks from the barn next door. Buddy, Cash's psychotic Jack Russell, has wasted no time finding and torturing the nearest barn cat. I find him parading his dead trophy from barn to barn, leaving a gaggle of screaming women in his wake. I grab said four-legged killer and march him into our camper, where I order him to stay out of trouble. While there, I attempt to wash his murderous germs off my hands. Alas, no water in the camper. Just a minor plumbing problem, Cash assures me. Our set up continues.
At 9:00 pm, I'm slogging through WalMart tossing food into my cart. Cash calls from the camper. It's on fire. Just a little electrical fire, he says. Not too much smoke damage. I dash back to the show grounds, just in time for Cash to dash to Home Depot before it closes in pursuit of some saveall wiring gizmo. He's just busting with good news. The water is now flowing again in the camper sink.
By 10:50 pm, the smoke has cleared. New wiring is installed. Children ( I have two extra plus mine) are bathed. Dogs are snuggled on MY pillow. Horses are fed and double checked. Philosopher, a gorgeous chestnut, hasn't had a bowel movement during the entire trip to Kentucky. I monitor these important developments, you see, in my glamorous position as horse trainer's wife. But more good news! At last check, Philosopher has expelled quite a load, and all finally is quiet.
I limp back into the camper and fall into the shower, so so close to sleep. Then I hear an elephant groaning. Alas, it's not an elephant. It's only the air conditioner in the camper issuing a death call.
And at that very moment, I hear my Mama: "What in heaven's name are you doing marrying a horse trainer?? I thought I raised you better than that."
One should always listen to her Mama. So if the good Lord's willing, and the camper and truck don't blow up yet again, we'll see you next week, after the 75th Annual Lexington Jr. League Horse Show!

Help Kim Stewart with our 2011 Award Winning (We hope!) Scrapbook CLS Mom Kim Stewart is working on the 2011 CLS Scrapbook (Thank you, Kim!). If you saw last years, you know it's going to be absolutely AMAZING. If you or your child takes riding lessons at CLS, Kim would love to have your picture. Please send it to Kim by email: kimstewart123@gmail.com. If you're showing in Academy or Show Horse shows, chances are we have lots of pictures of you. But we stay so busy, that we don't often take pictures during regular weekly lessons. But these riders are SO important to us. We want YOU represented in the CLS Scrapbook, also. So please send Kim photos! Thanks so very much! |

OK, So It's Not Oprah's Reading List . . .
But reading is and always has been my passion. When Ms. Jeanine and I were talking this week, and she said that "Reading books is becoming a lost art," I caught my breath. After lots of thinking, I've come to worry that she might be right. So here is my challenge to each CLS Family Member reading this. Please email us the titles of your favorite books, old and new, fiction, mystery or how-to. Send them now. Send them in the future. But share!! We have more than 1,500 people on our CLS email list, and growing! So let's learn from each other -- and from the books that shape us. I try, every day, to grow from those I meet through these incredible horses. I want to be the best person I can be. I want our children to be empowered to become the finest humans possible. My family teases me that I want to "save the world." Heavens yes! I do! And if we're all thoughtful, and curious and open-minded -- we can do just that. I love discovering and nurturing friendships with people from all walks of life. And yes, I want to be able to leave this earth a little bit better than I found her. I know no better way of doing that than sharing what inspires us. And for me, there is no more powerful inspiration that the written word. So here are my picks for this week, and a few others. I need your picks so that we all can grow and learn together. Let's make this a favorite feature of the CLS newsletter!
