High School Equestrians

Congratulations to Emily Stokes, Lindsay Jones, Caroline Anderson, Sydney Cearly and Sarah Martin -- our 2010-2011 USEF High School Equestrian Athletes.  These riders "lettered" in equestian sport by logging over 100 hours on horseback and participating in at least five horse shows throughout the 2010-2011 show season. Aren't their letter jackets gorgeous?

Letter from Parker

Dear CLS Friends,

June picturesA mom asked me recently what her child needed to do to win. Her baby had just started showing, and was improving like crazy and showing so much grace and determination -- and joy of riding.

Then I had similar questions from other mothers. Funny  - and heartening - that I didn't get a single question concerning ribbon color from a child.

As a mother, I know the power of a mother's love. I also know that sometimes we're not aware of our power to push our children to perform beyond their abilities -- albeit unintentionally.

I've been guilty, more times than I care to admit.

But please know parents that when we say that showing horses isn't about the winning, it's about the doing -- we mean it. Children who ride and show horses are sharpening their life skills, and learning critical life lessons, every single time they're in the presence of these magnificent creatures.

If you don't believe it, come be a fly on the wall -- just watch and listen to my babies working inside this old barn. Compassion. Leadership. Cooperation. Team work. Empathy. Competitiveness. Respect. Disappointment. Hurt Feelings. Hurt body parts. Bravery. Determination. Tears, both the good and hard kind. Kids loving each other. Kids fighting with each other. Kids apologizing to each other. One-thousand pound creatures, ever-loyal, ever-loving, all-knowing and all-trusting. You can witness God's magic, here, every single day.

This old barn has been witness to the raising of some mighty powerful, wonderful people. It has seen children off to Princeton, Yale, Vanderbilt, MIT, just to mention a few. Every one of those former barn babies has hanging on their walls still, or tucked away in a special place for keepsakes, ribbons of each and every color. Each faded and wrinkled strip of satin represents the growth of a child.

We'll see you soon, at the barn!

Parker

Our latest video from the Spring Fun Show is now on YouTube. Click here or see below. It might be the cutest thing I've ever seen!!!

Our New Spring Fun Show Video Now On YouTube

Please take a minute to watch the video from our Spring Charity Fun Show. No wonder we were so tired by day's end!!

Our babies raised more than $6,000 for the orphanage we've adopted in Ghana. This money will provide clean water, food, shelter and educational materials for a special group of CLS friends a world away.

Congratulations to Little Bits Members Rebecca Oster and Gena Wright, both of whom raised over $350 in donations for the orphans. Both riders will receive a FREE ACADEMY SHOW for their hard work! Way to go girls!

Our video was shot and compiled by our friends at Apex Video Productions. How lucky are we to have the photographers for National Geographic as our barn videographers?!?! This LOCAL family team is incredible! Please check out their other work at http://www.apexvideoproductions.com/

Piggy Bank Campaign to Save Neglected Horses!

Be a H.E.R.O.  Save a Horse!

Collect your pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters this summer to help our Little Bits Youth Club save a neglected horse!  Our goal is to assist H.E.R.O.  - a local non-profit organization - with providing rehabilitation of abandoned, piggy bankabused, neglected and unwanted horses right here in North Carolina.

H.E.R.O. supplies temporary housing, veterinary health care and rehabilitation to horses in need  until they are healthy enough to be  adopted by a loving family.

Our Little Bits Youth Club will collect change throughout the months of June and July.

Please donate your spare change this summer! Our hungry piggy bank is located in the barn lounge. Feed him please!!!!

Summer camps - advanced overnight

BIG NEWS! World reknowned instructor Ellen Beard will be with us for the Advanced Rider Camp

We're also pleased to announce that Ms. Ellen Beard will lead our fearless, famous SHOW RIDER OVERNIGHT CAMP August 1 - 7. Ellen is standing in for Cindy Mugnier, who can't coach our camp this year because of conflict of interest rules. She will be judging the World's Championship Horse Show later in August.

Ellen is a longtime friend of CLS, and one of the most celebrated and accomplished horsewomen in the sport. She is the head of the Equestrian Science programs at Stephens College in Columbia, MO.

This week will be gruelling preparation for the World's Championships, and the National Academy Finals. The roster is nearly full. So if you're interested in participating, contact Ms. Parker ASAP!

Quick Accounting Note
Note for riders who ride two times per month

stick horseWith the barn's ever-busy schedule, it's increasingly difficult to hold a spot for a rider who isn't riding at least weekly.

Also, repetition when learning to ride a horse is critical. If too much time passes between lessons, it's very difficult for riders to progress in their riding.

Therefore, in the future, for riders who are riding two times per month, the fee will be $40 per lesson. And these lessons must be prepaid.

Thank you for your cooperation. And thank you, as always, for being a part of the CLS family.

If you have any questions -- please contact Parker or Jeanne at the barn. Thanks so much!
